Anyone ever Visit Gettysburg?

I used to be stationed fairly close. (For 4 years) I went there inumerable times. I found the Museums fascinating. The Weapons collection was incredible.Especially the dedicated Sniper rifles. Heavy Octagonal barrel, scoped state of the art in their day rifles. Fascinating.

Reputed to be the most haunted place in the United States. Sightings there are incredibly high.

A hallowed ground.

    Never there Ken, but maybe someday would sure enjoy the visit.

    Did make it out to The Little Big Horn though several years ago. That place actually gave me the "willies" I could actually feel a supernatural presence there, where the hairs on my arms and neck stood up. It was not a scary thing, just a recognition of my senses that the place still held on to that battle.

    Hallowed ground for sure!

    I have been there a few times and if i remember right they have building codes or something to keep the buildings old and not allowing it to become a modern town.

    I liked the area.

    Awesome history Dad was a HUGE the War of Northern Aggression History fan and we visited Gettysburg multiple times. So many stories.

    I remember one about a guy who was stuck on a fence forgot how many mini balls they found in him, I guess the other side thought he was invincible!

    We stopped there in the late 70's on our vacation to the east coast. Did the tour of the battlefield, the cyclorama and ended the tour with a visit to the cemetery. As I stood there gazing over the tombstones all of a sudden I had a heavy chill go up my spine and I broke out in goosebumps all over.

    Years later Dad and I were talking about Gettysburg and he told me a wave of goosebumps swept over him and he had a chill go up his spine. He was amazed when I told him the exact same thing happened to me.

    During my quest for my geneology roots, I found out I have 2 relatives that are buried there. Spooky![:0]

    Have been twice, the level of commercialism there is sickening though.

    If anyone gets a chance, visit Antietam / Sharpsburg, just out in the country, no stores, shops, resturants, etc.

    Have had the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Was standing in the "sunken road", southern troops were stacked 3 deep for a quarter of a mile each direction.

    However both sites should be required for all Americans.

    Be humble for what our country stands for.

    Yep, ?bout an hour or so up the road (NW) from here. It?s a visit everyone should make if possible. Try standing at the foot of Little Round Top and picture the charge Pickett?s men made over and over. If ya stand real still I swear you can feel their presence.
    Sharpsburg and the sunken road, well, if visiting there don?t give ya chills I don?t know what will.

    A few things caught my attention and stayed with me...

    The number of dead in a 48 hour time frame...

    Multiple battlefield dug examples of bullets that struck other bullets in flight...

    A rifle that had 8 bullets and charges in it - purportedly the gent kept loading and pulling the trigger but never primed it...

    A CSA belt buckle that caught 2 bullets...

    A photo of a surgeons tent - multiple bone saw devices laid out and a half barrel (can't remember what they called them) in the background full of hands and feet and limbs...

    The docent saying that the battle and resulting injured and dead were attributed to groups of foragers from both sides looking for shoes...

    I've been to the Gettysburg Battlefield and Museums at least 12-15 times. I was stationed about 1/2 hour away for apprx. 4 years. Used to go to Gettysburg on dates. Skied at Ski Liberty, right down the road, extensively.

    The Battlefield and Museums fascinated me. If you have never been, I highly recommend it. I've also been to Antietam, repeatedly as well. Have paddled (Canoe/Kayak) repeatedly under "The Bridge." Stopped for lunch, imagined the charges across it etc. Kind of a History Buff.


    Antietam Creek, led to the Potomac. Semi decent rapids there, when the water levels are right. Long time paddler. (Canoe/Kayak.)

    Funny, sign at the front of the Battlefield said "Antietam." Guess they do not know. ("Knoe.") (And) I know ("knoe,") for sure, it is Antietam Creek.

    The National Park Service began a "rehabilitation" of the Gettysburg National Military Park in 2000. They have been buying lots & have been purging abominations to make the area look, as much as possible, as it did during the war.

    Yep, was there about 5 years ago. My mother's great great uncle fought there with the first Pennsylvania volunteers. Found the marker on the Battlefield. It's still hard to wrap my mind around how the thousands of men marched into certain death.

    Yep, seen the signs. Often times one side named the battle locations after the waterway (Antietam) and the other the nearby town (Sharpsburg). Hallowed ground no matter the name. Either way, history not to be forgotten.

    I am there a few times a year for a gun show event. My daughter an I try to see different places each time. You can feel the presences when there. Very sad feelings at some places.

    Yes, been there twice. Once in grade school and again much later. Got sick from looking down from observation tower. I found it amazing that North and South shared water at night at Spangler's Springs when the shooting stopped.

    Also, in that same area I think two troops hung tight during the battles. All thought they were father and son. One very fair and was killed in battle. Hat fell off and long hair fell out. Turns out trooper was his wife and did not want her husband to go off to war without her.

    Been thee quite a few times. I am a bit of a history buff and living in Mosby's Confederacy there is a lot near by. Gettysburg, Sharpsburg, Mannassas, Fredericksburg are all an hour or so away. As well as places like Winchester, Harper's Ferry, in fact the whole valley, and east, there is always some where to go see.
