Somewhere around 1500 people were killed. 110 mph winds and it was so hot the silica melted. It was reported birds died from lack of oxygen and were found encased in glass.

  Peshtigo, WI, 1871. The deadliest fire in U.S. History, it happened the same night as the Chicago Fire but was overshadowed by it even though the loss of life in Peshtigo was tenfold that of Chicago.

  I read the book about the fire it was just crazy but was dwarfed news wise because of the happenings in Chicago. The trees in that area at that time rivaled the California Redwoods.

  I had never heard of this calamity until right now.
  I could not believe the wind speed so I read up on it. 2000 degrees and 110 mph winds is a bad situation. The report I read said that the death toll could have approached 2500 people because some were burnt to ash and records were destroyed.
  So many people died there was no one left to identify some bodies; 350 were just buried in a mass grave.
  Incredible!
