Utility Trailer Maintenance
I have a 10 foot trailer with a wood deck which is showing its age. What should I do to protect the deck from the weather?

I redecked my 15 year old trailer this year. I have always kept a coat of paint on the wood. I would do it every few years. I started getting rot on the underside that wasn't painted. Before I put the new deck on I gave what would be the underside two coats of asphalt emulsion, and a good coat of black latex paint to the top. 0 -
I used to use creosote, but I got sick applying it, so I switched to linseed oil.
Couple of coats, but it can be slippery.0 -
The only thing I've found that really does any good is used motor oil but it leaves the trailer floor slick and is messy. 0 -
Raw, not boiled Linseed oil, way back when, when they used to put wood decks in pickup beds, that's what they recommended. I've been using it for years, and I have a 40 year old trailer that I put Raw linseed oil on it about every 3 or 4 years, and the deck still looks new other than scratches from being used
Boiled linseed oil will work, but it doesn't soak in as good. So it will leave a messy film and be slick, raw linseed oil won't. Plus you have to reapply it more often because it does not soak in is good as raw linseed oil0 -

+1, Also, I know of nothing better than boiled linseed oil that will bring out the grain in a gunstock and make it look awesome with out making it cloudy. Have done a couple this way just for looks but you would not want to beat the brush with them.0 -

I cut the sides out of a shipping container and used them to refloor my 16 trailer.
15 years now and no maintenance issues[:D]0 -
Don't paint it, will only hold moisture in, it will rot from underneath. 0 -
My Utility trailer is probably not what you are thinkin of, mine is made by a company called Utility!
So far this year I have replaced the reefer unit and had the interior walls restaked, that was $6000. 8 new tires, chinese tires and I have already had to replace ine due to abnormal wear and one more will need replacing soon due to abnormal wear, no more of these damned Aolus tires! Then I just replaced all 4 sets of brake, one inner hub seal, 4 sets of S-Cam tubes/bushings. Last week in that reefer unit I replaced the upper blower belt and the 90? gear box.
Aside from $35 washouts and greasing of the brake componants the reefer unit needs oil changes and servicing every few months.
So yes, keeping a Utility Trailer in service can be spendy [:D]0 -
I bought new lumber, rewired and painted it about t years ago. New fenders too. Haven't had a problem. Since I rewired it. 0 -
Two inch oak boards, 2 parts diesel+ 1 part used motor oil... Apply with paint roller..Both sides..Lasts for 12-15 years out in the weather....
