The U.S. Secret Service said Wednesday that "potential explosive devices" were addressed to former President Barack Obama and ex-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

In a statement, the Secret Service said that the package addressed to Obama was intercepted by agency personnel in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday morning.

"The packages were immediately identified during routine mail screening procedures as potential explosive devices and were appropriately handled as such," Assistant Special Agent Mason Brayman said in the statement. "The protectees did not receive the packages nor were they at risk of receiving them."

Brayman added: "The Secret Service has initiated a full scope criminal investigation that will leverage all available federal, state, and local resources to determine the source of the packages and identify those responsible."

The New York Times, citing two law enforcement officials, reported that the devices addressed to Clinton and Obama were similar to one found at the home of George Soros, a politically active billionaire and pariah to many on the right, on Monday.

Soros' home in Bedford, New York, is located fewer than nine miles from the Clintons' residence. Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill said in a tweet that "nothing" sent to Clinton "got to any home."

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the packages and is taking the situation "extremely seriously," a senior White House official told NBC News.

    I'd sure like to know what the actual construction of the devices is. That would very likely give a clue to what dumbass is sending them and the REAL intent behind same.

    I started to get a "feeling" when the first one was allegedly discovered by Soros' hired help, opened, then moved to a wooded area. Really? No detonation? Not even a fizzle? This is either, as you suggested, a BS attention getting operation, or the dumbest idiot on the planet building whatever these devices are. We'll never really see one, but I'd love to have an EOD buddy look them over.

    Those will be much easier to run ID work on. Lots of areas for DNA, prints, analysis of similarity in construction, shipping methods employed, etc. No activations, hence no reconstruction required. This sure ain't the Unibomber at work.

    One device pic leaked out from CNN (naturally). I just blew the pic up (no pun intended) as much as I could and went over it with my EOD guy here on staff. Pretty much the same conclusions as yours were reached. I smell a rat, or a sympathizer trying to throw some excrement in the game.
