About a month ago I sent in my 1000 yard rangefinder that had been dropped and would no longer range reliably. Sometimes it would only read out to less than 10 yards and sometimes after bonking it off a tree it woukd go out to maybe 100 yards or so then quit again. Called Leupold, was told to send it in for repair, even though itnwas dropped it was warrentied.

Yesterday this showed up at my doorstep, thanks Leupold!!

I don't know which binos he bought, but at least some of the binos are made in China. I wouldn't be surprised at all if that bino case was China also.

My Leupold scopes and one newer redfield scope are made in the USA. But after looking on the box. it appears the binocs are made in china. the case was made in china also. But was happy with the customer service by leupold. Have to admit, I assumed all their optics where made in USA. Guess not.

    204targetman,

No offense intended to anyone for their own opinions.

Unfortunately for us, Leupold has been deceiving us for the last few years. They have layers of manufacturing:

    - Assembled in the USA
    - Some parts made in the USA but featuring parts made overseas.
    - Entire product made overseas.

Sometimes you really have to look hard at the VERY fine print to discern the combination.

I really do understand the loyalty to USA products and I do my best to stand by them. But in the situation with Leupold, I find that they are overpriced and under-delivered for the top end products in their scope line. When competing against others in the venues I choose, Leupold is now 3rd tier or lower with March and Nighforce above them.

    Best.

Never heard of march scopes before this. Looking at their website it looks as if they are trying to play a bit of the game that N/N mentioned about what Leupold is playing. The have a big USA flag on their website, but mention that they are made in Japan.
At least it's not China. Might look into one to see how they perform[:0] Thanks for the info N/N...

I have had good luck with Leupold rifle scopes old and new. Just got a VX Freedom 3x9 rimfire and I am quite pleased with it. March and Nightforce are built like tanks and weigh about as much. I have couple Vortex Viper PSTs and they seem to be holding up quite nice.

I was in the market for a new set of binoculars a few years ago and realized that all binoculars under a certain price point are made in China. At that point, I believe it was $250-$300 - all made in China. It is the same with scopes, although that price point may be $75-$100.

I am a big fan of Leupold as well as the Redfield Revolution scopes - the only Redfields made in the USA.

As far as I know, no body offers optics with more of their line being Made in USA, than Leupold.

However, If Leupold binoculars were ever made in the USA, it was a long time ago.

I'd imagine that the real reason they bought the Redfield brand was so that they could offer something in the low end scope price range, with out damaging the Leupold brand. After the Revolution (and putting the notion that Redfields were made in the USA as well) cam e the lower end Redfields, all made elsewhere.

Anyway, it's just business and I'm not mad at them for it. In my mind, they've not tried to hide the things they've done.

But if a consumer fails to look into where something is made before they buy it, assuming it's "Made ini the USA' because it's a Leupold - well I'm sure that is OK with Leupold too.

One could assume that anything with the Nikon brand on it would be made in Japan, but that isn't true either.

No US made scope uses glass they make themselves, nor in fact does any use glass made in the US. No exceptions. The only scope in the world with all components made entirely by a single company is Schmidt Bender.

The myth of optics made in the USA is just that, a myth. At best assembled in the USA.

Why buy US and get a similar product overpriced because we allow it.

Leupold stands behind their products 100% no matter when they were made or who purchased them(no warranty card/original purchaser) baloney. That is worth a lot to me.
I am of the belief that all their glass(lenses) are produced in Japan, which is true of most manufacturers, including Nightforce. Nothing wrong with that, as long as it is not being misrepresented.
Was looking to buy a good pair of binoculars in 2010 from Leupold. Everything that I looked at was made in china and I was disgusted.
Called Leupold and they said that only their Gold Ring binos were made in the U.S.A. Found a pair at an outfitter in Idaho that may be the last pair made here. Believe that they are all "off shore" (hate that term) now.
Not sure if there is a U.S.A. made pair of binocualrs anymore.
    Maybe Trijicon?
Have bought a couple pair of Steiner(they say Germany on them)and they do not say china on them anywhere, which is a big plus.

    danielgage,

    quote:are they American-made?

No, they aren't. Both are Japanese glass with the March being made with Deon designs:

Deon Optical Design is a small custom scope manufacturing company, and to maintain its high standards of quality and attention to detail, it plans to stay this way for years to come.
All components are made in Japan and are assembled by highly skilled engineers.
Deon?s optical design and mechanical reliability cannot be imitated.
March Rifle Scopes are opening the way to a new world of shooting.

But, and please bear this in mind, the design and manufacturing tables have been turned from US design and Japanese copies to Japanese designs and the rest of the world copying. This is especially true with the Deon Optical Design. They innovate and the rest of us try to catch up and copy.

The end result, with the exception of some German and Austrian glass, is that DEON leads the world in making the best glass and the best designs for rifle scopes. They are also expensive. You can be the holdout if you so choose, standing by the Leupolds of the world, but in direct comparisons by experienced shooters, March scopes are simply the best of the Japanese manufacturing sector.

As noted, the exceptions are the Germans, Schmidt-Bender and the Austrians, Swarovski. But only Swarovski has a physical presence in the U.S. in Rhode Island.

The other digression is the fact that we all see things differently whether physically through a scope or depending upon our own personal needs and finances. There is no getting around the fact that many hunters and shooters simply do not need or desire the excellence of the most expensive rifle scopes. Most are satisfied with the long time leaders in the middle of the current market for whatever reasons. And if they are satisfied, I am not the one to attempt to dissuade them. Each of us has the right to decide our own paths for shooting and hunting gear.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    Best.

Good point! As I get older my eyes rather than my glass tend to be the limiting factor on how well I see and I have gone more to red dot optics for hunting, as much shooting here is done at ranges under 250 yards, despite all the tales of 600 yard shots.

Got a used 30 year old M-8 1.5X EER scope years ago. recently had a problem with frosting on the inside.

Contacted them and sent it in. They had nothing in stock close and would be months, they let me know, so was Replaced with a FX-2.5x28 EER.

    Great service.

I reckon I will see how good their customer service is, I could not get a VX11 3x9x40 scope to adjust for me correctly today, maybe they will be able to fix it. The rifle was grouping OK but I could not get the scope to change the point of impact.

I bought a pair of Vortex razor 10x binos 10 years ago. I compared them to some of the best out there like Swarovski, Steiner and others. For less than half the price I think they had comparable performance to the high end brands and far outperformed Leupolds best. Several other people compared them and agreed with me. Now I see they have been improved but I doubt my eyes could tell the difference. These were made in Japan but I have no idea where they are built now. Bob
