the rude parrot
So this nice fellow has always wanted a parrot. He thinks they're the neatest thing ever and would love to teach one to talk. He saves up his money and goes to the pet store.
Once there he's shocked at how expensive they are. A nice beautiful parrot costs thousands of dollars. He's crushed, and the clerk feels bad for him. "Listen," the clerk says, "maybe I can help you out. I have a parrot in the back you can have for only two hundred bucks, but he has a problem. He's very rude."
The nice fellow thinks it over, and he's certain that his nice ways and time and effort can change the parrot. He quickly buys it and takes it home. He hangs the cage in his kitchen and goes to bed as happy as can be.
The next morning as he is making his breakfast he starts talking to the parrot, and the parrot stands looks at him for a bit and says, "Shut up." The guy is shocked, and off he goes to work. He comes home at the end of the day and feeds the parrot and talks gently to it, and the parrot again tells him to shut up and calls him a jerk.
The days pass and the man is as nice as could be, and the parrot just gets ruder and ruder and his language gets worse and worse. One night the man comes home exhausted from work, and stumbles through door. The parrot immediately starts insulting him in the worst way possible, and the man has had enough. He just snaps, and he grabs the parrot's cage, puts it in the freezer, and slams the door. He stands there for 30 seconds, catching him breath and counting to 10. He calms down, opens the freezer door, and puts the cage back on its stand. Then he goes to bed.
The next morning the man walks into the kitchen, ready for the usual abuse, and the parrot says, "Good morning." The man is stunned, and stunned again when he leaves for work and the parrot says, "Have a nice day." When the man returns that evening the parrot welcomes him home and says good night to him when he turns in. This new, polite behavior continues the next day.
The man is pleased but quite surprised, and he thanks the parrot for its change in attitude. The parrot says, "You're welcome." And then the parrot pauses and asks quietly, "When I was there in the freezer---what did the chicken do?"
