It looks like it has been in a saddle scabbard too, with those scars on the stock.
I have always wanted a 1876 Centennial Winchester and that model was the one used by the Canadian Mounties.0 -

You are lucky man to have 4. I hope you shoot them every once in a while.
To me guns are meant to be shot and although I don't really have any "collectable" guns anymore I have a few old ones and I make sure I shoot them at least once a year.
To me one of the saddest things to see is something like a pristine Colt Python with even a turn line and never fire.
I feel sorry for the owner who never got to experience the feeling of such a fine revolver.
I always wanted a 76 in 45-75 with a 24" octagon barrel and express sights. I have bid on a few Taylor repo's and I will have one some day.......I have 100rds of brass and dies along with a bullet mold so I am ready when I finally get one[;)]0 -

Sorry to say Sam, I do not shoot most of my old Winchesters.
I do on occasion shoot a couple early 1894's and will hunt one day with one of my 1886's. I have a deluxe 45-70 that I'd love to shoot a Buffalo with! The gun shoots like a dream, and is deadly accurate.
I am planning on taking an original 1895 Winchester 405 out west this fall for Elk. If the Elk cooperate and give me a nice 100-150 yard shot on a clear, bright sunny day. My eyes, have some difficulties in low light with open sights......
I'll also on occasion shoot Pheasants with a Model 42 Winchester.
The rest pretty much just entertain me sitting retired in the racks.......0 -
I have a 2 1886's one in 33 WCF and the other in 40-82. I have a 94 in 38-55. one in 32-40 and several pre-64's in 30wcf.
I have 2 1895 Winchesters one in 303 and the other in 40-72 WCF.
I bought ever single one of them at the Puyallup Gunshow in WA during the 80's when you could get them for a song especially the oddball calibers. Those odballs were not shot as much either. Its been a fun time making them shoot especially before the internet. I wrote letters to guys Like Mike Ventrino, Ken Waters and other to get help find/making brass and bullet molds.
They will be the last to go when I sell all my stuff.
I looked at the taylor repo 76's and they are nice its just hard finding one without a 28" barrel(too long). Plus I would prefer a shotgun butt.0 -
Sounds like you have nice taste in old Winchesters.
I too remember when "odd ball" caliber rare Winchesters sold way too cheap! I know nothing about the ballistics etc of a 40-82 but have a couple and would consider shooting them too! My '94 38-55's are way up on my "to do" list to take to a range before my eyes get any worse for open sights.
Honestly, shooting is my least favorite part of guns! Hunting and collecting are my favorite parts......[;)]0 -

Another very cool Winchester.
These are just beautiful and classic looking Sporting Rifles. (in my humble opinion!)
I used to have a re-blued one with a scope mounted on it. It was dog as far as collectors are concerned, but it was a hoot to shoot!
I wish I would have kept it. I'd like to hunt with one and mine is just too nice to drag around the hills and woods......

Those used to the quintessential Alaska gun. You never saw one for sale up there.
The M71 is a great gun and in the 70's you could get them for a song because you could not get ammo for them.
Now with Browning making a repo and Marlin with their guide gun the pressure is off of them but to the purist they are still the boss.
That one is beautiful you can tell it never rode in a Gun scabbard on a Bush planes wing[;)]
