proper ammo

Bought an original Springfield 45/70 trapdoor and an orginal Springfield 30/40 Krag from a buddy. Would like to know the proper ammo to fire through each.


Both ammos are available, BUT I don't want to exceed pressures for antique rifles. Both bores on the rifles are dark, but both are fireable.

  In the Trapdoor I?d only shoot Cowboy style ammo like from Black Hills or learn to reload and use black powder. I definitely wouldn?t run high octane stuff like Buffalo Bore or Garret unless you want a grenade. The Krag you should be able to run factory ammo like Remington and Winchester make.

  I think any Factory ammo would be fine in the 30-40. The SAMMI specs for it are established and have been based on the original loading.
  
  For the 45-70 shoot, like stated above the "Cowboy" loads would be fine.
  
  Remington makes a load "For all Rifles" with a 405gr SP.
  
  Where it gets fun is when you reload for the trapdoor. Trailboss and A5744 powders are great for low pressure loads.
  
  
  One trick I use when loading 45-70. I have several Marlin 1895's in 45-70 that will handle "hot" loads. When I reload for the trapdoor I used nickle plated brass so I don't get them mixed up. The regular brass cases are for "Modern" guns only.
