I bet if you had access to a time machine and could bring back 200 beat cops who worked the streets of Chicago in the 1950?s and turned them loose with the same rules or engagement as they had then they could clean up the city in six months. Oh and no press allowed.

I am not so sure trampling on peoples rights codified in the Constitution will fix much or change anything. It sounds great on the surface but what if it is you getting your ass beat with clubs for being in the wrong place at the wrong time? How would you feel about the police then?
There have been several questionable shooting by LEO's that more and more are getting recorded on body cams. Cops are not infallible, they are not God or the jury. Their job is to serve and protect all citizens, even the accused.
The police can not fix Chicago, only the residents, black mostly, living in a failed culture, can make the societal changes within their community to reestablish nuclear families, respect for other people.
When kids fear repercussions from dad and hurting Mom's feelings they tend to toe the line a lot better.

Here's why I think you are completely wrong:
Go back to the 1930s, and what would you find? It might have been worse then than now.
Then we had WW2, and a lot of people died out. I sometimes suspect they'd make sure the more criminally oriented ones would be closer to the front.
When everyone came home, there were plenty of jobs supplying a war weary world with manufactured goods. Any hard working man could probably find a wife because we'd lost a few men.
So everyone was busy making good wages and getting married.0 -

I look at my son and how he's being raised. We go to Cub Scouts and the Scoutmasters are constantly talking about respect for others, about helping people, about cleaning up your mess, about learning. We go to soccer practice and the coach is all about trying hard, learning the fundamentals, good sportsmanship and a handshake at the end of the game. At school the teachers are demanding and move through the curriculum quickly. You need to pay attention to keep up. And 95% of the kids who are with him in Scouts, soccer, and school want to succeed and pay attention and do well.
My kid is surrounded by people motivated to succeed and do the right thing. It's an incredibly powerful current pulling him towards a good outcome. Those kids in Chicago are surrounded by people motivated NOT to succeed and to do wrong things. Violence and law-breaking and failure are glorified.
That a kid sometimes emerges from such an environment as Chicago successful and law-abiding is astounding.0 -

..You're assuming they have a Mom and Pop at home who care at all.
More often, the kid doesn't know who their father is and he probably
isn't there. Mom has a string of baby daddies. Or, they're being

Believe me, most of the cops today, even the Millenials, wish we could go back to cracking heads for the repeat customers we constantly deal with. Unfortunately, we are under constant threat of lawsuit, and now it is threat of firing and/or jail time.
Here is my prediction... things are going to get much worse before they get better. Depolicing is a term that started just a few years ago. It refers to officers switching from being proactive to reactionary. A lot of officers already have this mindset. It will get worse. It will get to where most officers just respond to calls and that will be it. Administrators won?t discipline them, because we are having such a hard time finding competent recruits. We?ve already had to lower our hiring standards. The recruits we are hiring today would not have been hired 10 years ago. Today, quality recruits have options in the private sector for better pay, benefits, schedule, etc.0 -

respect. Our small local dept. has men that could not catch nor
tussle with a tortoise.

and the occasional break in. I don't know but can someone tell me
if there are ongoing fitness tests for police? Our fire chief is
well over 300 pounds and yes, he does respond to calls. He can barely
climb stairs by himself. I'd hate to think he'd have to carry me
down a flight of stairs. We'd both die!
