"cooling off" period back in the news
NBC evening news had a story on a young man who bought a gun and committed suicide a few hours later.
The focus of the story was on how a "waiting period" would have given him time to reconsider, but there was no support given for a waiting period working.
Does anyone have any data on such waiting periods, or are we just riding another emotional roller coaster to build ratings?

When I lived in SoCal there was a well publicized case of a young man who went to a local gun store and tried to purchase a firearm. After being told that there was a ten day waiting period he left the shop and drove a short distance to an indoor shooting range where he read and filled out the range safety form. Once he was good to go he rented a pistol, ear and eye protection, and bought a box of ammo. He went through the sound proof doors, took his place on the firing line, and then shot himself in the head.

I have never understood why in THIS COUNTRY it is looked on as such a taboo..Many Countries and cultures it is considered a good way to die. Look at the Samurai of old.. Now that was a bad way to go..If you were told ,,you gutted yourself 0 -
they need to make places to help people along provide a clean place . and meds to do the job I would bet gun deaths would drop
as for pain fee ,,I know two people one a cousin shot himself in the stomach with a shotgun lived thru it
another a neighbor used a shotgun put it under his chin blew his face ( all of it nose mouth eyes ) off I was told the EMT were even having a tough time when they arrived at the sight .. any way lived may be dead now but was in a nursing home after doing it last I head
I use to tell the ones that wanted to off them self ( looking for attention ) start your car close the doors of the garage put on your favorite music on get your favorite beverage and go to sleep

The media loaves to talk about how there are far fewer suicides by guns in Europe.
Of course they leave out the part the suicide rate there is the same as here but because guns are harder to get people off themselves in other ways

We had a case like this in central Georgia when I was a paramedic.
Guy blew his face off, but missed the skull. No eyes, no nose, just part of the lower lip. No brain damage.
Good God what a nightmare! Living Hell!! I feel sorry for anyone who commits suicide but to do this?
All this guy had left was one inch of the lower lip. He was in ICU, his fiancee would come up to visit him, after 25 days, he got a look in a mirror, and he somehow screwed up his IV, he induced air into the IV line and went ahead and killed himself in ICU.
But a shotgun is a badass weapon and if you shoot yourself in the head properly, 100 percent chance of death.
Also I find it hard to believe a story of a guy who shot himself in the stomach with a shotgun and lived. I wonder if he just made a glancing shot and hit the side of his belly and some of the shot missed. Hard to believe he survived a straight-on shot like that because I worked 14 torso hits at close range with shotguns, all with bird shot, and every one died. Most were Dead Right There.
I also noticed a .38 to the temple was pretty effective.0 -
Japan has virtualy no private gun ownership and one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Had a relative commit suicide several years back with a shotgun. Had a conversation with his brother in law at the funeral and told him if I had terminal cancer I would just close the garage door and let the car run. Within the year he did just that. Many states have waiting periods. Doubt it really will stop many suicides. 0 -
Perhaps not as intentionally but from what I hear the opioid epidemic rivals firearms in suicide. 0 -
First responders will tell you that those who are suicidal should also be considered homicidal.
In Northern VA last year, a 12 year old boy jumped from an I-66 overpass, in a suicide attempt. He landed on a car, killing the woman driver; he survived. You just can't stop someone who is determined to kill himself.
I saw a recent study that showed that in places where guns were not available, suicides were committed by other means. Percentages of population killing themselves remained the same. Sad, but you have to eliminate the threat from collateral damage.

As a mass communications professor, I used to do research that included media reporting of deaths by suicide. If I recall correctly, various measures to prevent suicides caused a temporarily lower than usual number of suicides, followed somewhat later by a higher than usual number of suicides. That suggests prevention measures were basically a wash -- die now or die later, but die they would. (I don't know whether those results would be found today; my research was done many years ago.) 0 -
The waiting period makes me uncomfortably chuckle.
I've been vetted by the State Police for my foid and concealed carry but yet I have to wait 24 for long gun and 36 for handgun.
I guess they know I won't do anything wrong the multiple guns of each at home.

I recall about 30 or 40 years ago there was a guy in Iowa who, following an argument with his male 'companion,' marched into a bar where the boyfriend was and shot himself in the head with a .357 Magnum. He put the muzzle under his chin and the bullet exited the top of his skull. He lived. He had trouble speaking and his personality changed completely, but he lived.
I saw a follow-up story on him about 10 years later. Pretty amazing.
A cooling off period would do little. Most of the local suicides here have been hangings.0 -
I remember reading about a guy who put a pistol to his forehead and pulled the trigger and lived.
Turned out what the bullet did was a near perfect "frontal lobotomy" and the voices in his head went away.
What's really sad about many suicides is the the real victim is the family who have to clean things up as well as live with the guilt of not doing something when they "should have known"0 -
I wonder how people in places that have waiting periods for exercising their Second Amendments rights would react if their state governments enacted laws putting waiting periods on emails, making comments on social media, joining a church, voting, etc?
The same people supporting waiting periods to purchase a gun will scream bloody murder when ever a state government wants to put a waiting period on a woman getting an abortion and with an abortion they know something human is going to die.0 -
I watched a guy commit suicide at an indoor range.
It was at Jims in Fayetteville NC. I was looking at guns and they have a "Glass" wall so you can see people shooting on the Range.
Some soldier went in rented a gun and blew his brains out right there on the range.
It was not a good thing to see...............I don't go to indoor ranges anymore if I can help it.
Oh yea I remember my first encounter with the cooling off period. It was WA state when I was stationed at Ft Lewis in the 80's. I went to buy a Pistol and the guy told me I had to wait 5 days to pick it up.
I was surprised and asked why? He said its a cooling off period.........Dumbest thing I had ever heard.0
