The Little Bighorn..... Custer Killed by a Woman??

Maybe, though I tend to distrust oral histories, and it is a lot like playing telephone, what comes out "100" years later may very well not be what went in.
Most of the tribal histories say they don't know who killed Custer, but that several women mutilated the corpse. Perhaps one was Buffalo Calf Road Woman.0 -

the stuff that was done to his corpse would not be considered "respecting the dead". the women of the tribes did all sorts of mutilation to the bodies strewn upon the battlefield. 0 -

When I was there the first time I took guided tour. The guide was a park ranger of Crow Indian decent. I asked questions during the tour and I spoke with him for several minutes after the tour. He was willing to share and seemed to enjoy having someone to educate, me.
He told me, on the men that were with Custer, what ever men where left alive were finished by boys 12-14 or so that rushed on in and finished them off. At that point not many were alive. He told me they didn't know who killed Custer or even for sure when he died. He did tell me the Indians rained arrows down on them as they lay behind their horses.
Custer's men had killed their horses to make breast works. They were on a hill, that's why the Indians shot arrows up in the air and let them rain down on them. The Indians had guns, but arrows worked for what they needed.
He said one of the Indians described it this way: he clapped his hands fast like the shots coming from Custer's group to start with, then he kept slowing his claps down until there were very few, as in very few shots. That is when the boys rushed in and finished them off. Some of Custer's men tried to run but were killed.
From being there looking over the ground, seeing where the Indian camps were, Custer's approach and the descriptions of the battles I am having trouble seeing where a woman got to him to knock him off of his horse before they killed their horses for breast works. Anything is possible I guess.0 -

i read the women stabbed/cut his eyes--so to SEE the pain he had done to the Peoples, and then jammed sewing awls in the ears---so he could HEAR the songs of grief of the fallen Peoples. [besides being castrated and other stuff..many soldiers were dismembered or disemboweled. 0 -
I've read some Indians disfigured their dead enemies in order to prevent having to fight them again in the after life. It was a belief of theirs. While we think of it as a bad thing to do, they seen it as necessary. I do not know if this is correct but it's what I've read. 0 -

While working with staff members of the West Point Museum, I read a day book report stating that Custer was found naked...in the sitting position leaning against a dead horse...he had a bullet wound to the left side of his chest, and a bullet wound to his right temple.
A more interesting discussion I had with the staff members was who was actually buried in Custer's grave at West Point...
When Custer was initially buried at the battle site, he was placed on a shelter half along side his brother Tom, who was mutilated .. and could only be identified by a rose tattoo on his arm.
Both men had an empty 45 70 cartridge case with an identifying piece of paper inside...inserted in their mouths. They were then covered with another shelter half and the hole was then filled with dirt.
About a year later a detail returned to recover the bodies of the dead officers and rebury all the enlisted men in a mass grave.
The written report from that detail states that Custer was recovered from a grave containing a single body....
So it looks like an enlisted man may be buried in Custer's grave at West Point, and Custer and his brother are in the mass grave with all the enlisted men..0 -
Are you familiar with the saying that Indians don't lie? I have been studying American I Indians for over 60 years. They Lied as much as anybody else. There is no way of telling who shot Custer. There were thousands of Bullets fling around there and in the fury of battle it is impossible to know. You can find a dozen claims to the contrary I am sure. In this political correct period of time Women want credit for everything. Women will be physically equal to men when they have a football team who can beat the patriots. Either the Nez Perce lied about Looking Glass's death or he died three different ways. Besides I saw a photo of him a few years after the battle and it was identified as him by other Nez Perse Indians at the time. Long story. 0
