Failure to Fire American Factory Loaded Ammunition

Hi guys!

I shared an anomaly with the folks on another site to see what they had to say. I figured that it would be a much better conversation here on GunBroker.

    Like you said, one in a million. Every so often there is a dud in whatever you are working with, ammunition or people.

    R-P is Remington Peters.

    Remington has had 'quality' issues with their ammo for going on 30 years. Sad to say, this is not 'one in a million'.

    I've had 2 failures with factory ammo in my life time but I've never had a dud that I reloaded myself. That's why I only shoot the ammo I make and that's what I carry to fend for my life also.

    I have had several misfires with factory ammo in my 50+ years of shooting, it happens.

    Can you guestimate how many in 50+ years? And 30+ year old surplus ammo does not count as brand new American made factory ammo. [;)]

    Back when Remington stopped making standard velo 22lr (a favorite among the Bullseye crowd) and 'marketed' their 'Target' 22 lr, it was common to have 10 NON fires per box of 50. This when on for quite a while and 'we' switched to other brands - CCI Standard Velo being one of the best bangs for a buck.

    Around the same time frame, our local PD PPC team was sponsored by Remington for the PPC Nationals. It was 'duds galore' w/ the 38 Spl Mid-range ammo. When the PPC matches started up that Fall, all and sundry heard about that.

    Other than using Rem STS hulls to reload for Skeet, I avoid Remington like the plague

    A drop of oil on the primer? Maybe even some moisture

    You must not have done a lot of shooting or been around anybody that's done a lot of shooting, because I wouldn't say it's an anomaly or even a common occurrence, but it does happen quite a bit.

    Could be you stored it too close to your heater, stored it in the trunk of your car, stored it in your garage, stored it in a high humidity area, got oil on it, or it could just be a bad primer from the factory...

    But it certainly is not an anomaly

    When I have a primer strike but no fire;
    I wait a few seconds,actually many seconds,to see if its a hang fire.

    I then dispose of the round just as soon as I can. I will not put it in my pocket or return home with it. Sure one in a million,but thats too risky for me.

    How many of those duds/misfires were due to a weak spring or borderline short firing pin? Or even stiff lube in bolt in freezing cold? Guess we will never know?

    twice in my lifetime, i have experienced multiple FTF with newly purchased ammo, particularly 12 gauge slugs..when i buy, i buy all of the same lot number..usually 100 rounds, as did lots of slug shooting besides shotgun deer season. if i had misfires or FTF i would report this to the maker, giving all the circumstances of the outing. in each case remington, and later winchester sent me vouchers for lots more ammo than that which i had problems with.

    This happens with all manufactures from time to time. When you think of all the billions of rounds produced it's bound to happen. It could be something that contaminated the primer, a missing anvil, or even no pellet in the primer. In 40+ years of shooting I've had three center fire rounds with defective primers and two with no powder which lodged a bullet in the barrel, not counting .22's. I have even had one case head separation with factory new Federal ammunition from a recalled lot that made it to the shelf.#65279;

    I spend 2 days a week at a public range and yes R-P ammo and duds are not uncommon. The dud barrel at the range has almost as much R-P as old milsurp.
    Their rim thickness on their brass varies substantially and some will not chamber in some pistols and rifles. I have a Ruger Blackhawk that will not chamber their 45 LC ammo because the brass rim is too thick.

    I have once fired R-P brass that will not hold new WW or CCI primers because the pocket is oversize.

    I have always bought either federal, Winchester White box, or Remington UMC for practice. Whatever I could get a good deal on. Never had an issue. But I probably should stay away from Remington UMC. Just in case I need to slum it and use practice loads for carry. And because it sounds like they are prone to issues.

    Interesting. Failures to fire have been very common in my experience with rimfire ammunition. Not very common with brand new, American, factory loaded, centerfire ammunition. Your experience confirms that for me. I hope none of those mishaps caused any injury or damage to you or your firearms. How did the case head separation shake out for you?#65279;
