Iran theatens to Shut Down The Persian Gulf

Is this just hype or Is Iran radicals in the government prepared to make war in the Persian gulf knowing oil sanctions will overthrow their power over their citizens soon anyway?

No the sky is not falling but there is a severe storm brewing! Bet on it!

LONDON (Reuters) - An Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander said on Wednesday that Tehran will block oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf if the United States bans Iranian oil sales.

?If they want to stop Iranian oil exports, we will not allow any oil shipment to pass through the Strait of Hormuz,? Ismail Kowsari was quoted as saying by the Young Journalists Club (YJC) website.

    Remember when we cut off Japan from buying steel production before WWII? Well, then it's the same tactic now used on Iran.

    And you can bet the line has been drawn in The Middle East! I hope Trump is still in Office to cut a deal with Putin on this one! If not then American is going to see a lot of stress coming it's way.

    What would happen if the U.S. Navy made a decision to conduct an exercise, say next Friday between 1300 and 1320, and sink every boat belonging to the Iranian Navy? Would that effect their plans to shut down the gulf??

    The Strait of Hormuz is the choke point to the Persian Gulf. It can be secured, at least temporarily from land. It isn't as hard to take out an oil tanker as it is to take out a US Naval vessel. How many shots would it take before tankers just refused to go through?

    I'm not saying it is a war that they could win. But, at least for a short time, they could shut it down.

    I'm not saying it is a war that they could win. But, at least for a short time, they could shut it down.

    I would think that after one tanker had been shot at all of those shore batteries would be turned into smoking ruins with a light pink mist.

    From 2008 to 2016 Iran has threatened to shut down the Strait of Hormuz. this has always been their response to US and European sanctions of total oil embargo against the country. The threats have never been carried out.

    In 1988 Iran mined the gulf resulting in some major damage to the US guided missile frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts, when it struck a Iranian mine. By the end of Operation Praying Mantis in response to the mining of the Gulf in April 1988, our air and surface units had sunk or severely damaged, about half of Iran's operational fleet.

    With Iran's new threats this would put them on the razors edge if they attempted to close the Straight of Hormuz. Iran has been a burr under the saddle of the US, Israel, and other countries in the middle east, the Sunni-Shia divide. If they do attempt to close the Straight, I would expect heavy damage to their navy. I would also bet that Iran's nuclear facilities would be major targets in any US response.

    Iran's mistake is thinking that it is business as usual, as it was, with past presidential administrations.

    Rarely are armed conflicts started by men making rational decisions. The Iranian leadership controls much of what their population sees. They may be hoping to generate sympathy among their people by portraying themselves as the victims once they are attacked. The loss of men and hardware is acceptable to cement the control of their population.

    If Iran blocks the Persian gulf it will only last about 20 minutes anyway. We have the Trump card.
