Shipping parts guns
Been a busy year here. My dad was killed a few months back and I am going through all his guns, cleaning, fixing, selling what I don't want. Some are in pretty bad shape. For shipping purposes, some of these are so rusted and unusable I am wondering if I still have to mail them by air. Handguns. One revolver is so rusted, can't get the hammer back and the cylinder doesn't turn. Selling for parts. It's C&R. Can I mail this by ground rather than air for something that doesn't work and likely can't be fixed?

It is my understanding the requirement to ship handguns by next day or second day is just a Fedx and UPS rule. I don't think there is a federal law. If you do ship ground and the gun is lost UPS probably will not pay the claim. Good luck and sorry about your Dad.

You might want to sell them as parts....cylinder, hammer, barrel and such taken apart might sell for more than you would get for the trashy non working gun and you will not have to worry about shipping regulations.
Yes, they are "guns" unless they are destroyed beyond repair according to the ATF.0 -

Lenoir. I've always done handguns by air and long guns by ground, and when I buy they always get sent the same way.0 -

You are 100% correct on the below. I did some serious study on this a few years ago, and that is how it is. If it gets lost/stolen, you are screwed, but that is how I shipped a few things I sold. Had zero problems.

Non licensees must ship handguns, regardless of age or condition by common carrier.

I recall seeing somewhere that handguns must be shipped next day. I think it was on the ATF site but I can't find it at the moment.
Also - even an FFL can NOT ship a handgun to a C&R using USPS. Must use common carrier. Then we're back into the overnight vs ground...0 -
Weary Traveler is absolutely correct- unless the gun is an antique. If it uses loose powder (like ball & cap) or is it was made before 1899, it is not a firearm, but an ANTIQUE firearm, which can be mailed in US Mail. 0
