Weather report from Wrightsville Beach
I began my swim this morning in a drizzling rain with overcast sky then under a rainbow and finally a beautiful blue sky with big puffy white clouds. No signs whatsoever of the monster headed our way with one exception. I swim by a half dozen or more private piers and usually there are sea gulls perched on the boats and pilings along with large egrets but not today. Not a single bird. Are they smarter than me?? Time will tell I guess. As I was leaving the beach at 8:30 am the police were set up at the bridge only allowing residents on the beach and telling them there would be a 8pm curfew. It?s now 7 pm and back here at home in Burgaw which is about 25 miles NW of Wilmington everything is still calm. I expect we will start to see some wind tomorrow.

We have bird feeders that i have to fill twice a day and i have not seen a bird in 2 days. I do not know where they went but they are hiding good.

This could be an opportunity to have a "Hurricane Party" and get acquanted with your family.
Make sure the location is well away from the beach and the house on high ground.
DO NOT assume your house is high enough,, a wet blanket will be thrown on the party if it is.

Neil Young, still around and touring with a nice looking wife. They were married in Aug of this year. Obviously touring isn't all he's doing. She reminds me of HOT LIPS on Mash. Hope Neil will survive the marriage.[:D]0 -
As a volunteer fireman I must say I hate the idiots who purposely chooses to stay behind in an area under mandatory evacuation notice . At some point they will yell for help and we will try to come running. Lots of good men and women will risk their lives to save the Darwin candidates . Keep us in your prayers as it it starting to get real rough on the coast here . Thanks 0 -

I'd tell them that their death wish is about to be realized if they stay after a mandatory evacuation has been issued. No sense in risking the lives of our first responders for FOOLS!0 -
It is a free country; if they want to stay after being told to leave, that is their right and they are on their own. Nobody should have to risk their life saving the holdouts.
I remember in the flood of '08 (Iowa) there was a large photo in the newspaper of a guy in an SUV trying to return to his soon-to-be-underwater home. In front of the SUV was a cop with a shotgun pointed at the driver. Apparently the cop was ready to shoot the guy rather than let him risk drowning. Madness!
The driver was saying that his beloved dogs were in his basement and he wanted to try to save them. But, he was hauled downtown to the station (no charges were filed) and detained until his house was submerged so he would have no need to return.
If I was that cop I would have asked the man if his dogs were worth drowning for and if he said yes, I would have wished him luck and got out of the way. And I certainly would not have pointed a gun at him. The guy just loved his dogs, that's all.0 -
I know it's very serious in the affected area's but tonight the news was saying a cat 2 storm instead of a 5. I guess we will have to wait and see[?][?][?] 0 -
Today in Wrightville Beach, maybe around 2pm, 20 firemen and Coast Guard guys had to go out and rescue a couple who decided to ride out the storm in a sailboat.
Ride out a Cat 2 at Ground Zero in a sailboat. Good Lord I hope she got her tubes tied so they can't reproduce.0 -
