The difference being we brought liberty, while the Soviets struggled to maintain tyranny. It is up to them to choose to maintain it. At a certain point we need to bow out. A decisive win would have been to push back to the ante-bellum border (perhaps as far north as Pyongyang) stop, and demand a war-ending treaty. One stupid general was allowed to run amuck, however, resulting in the deaths of 100s of thousands of people, and ending up with a super-power brokered cease-fire that stands to this day.

I can't see that a longer stay in Afghanistan will do us any good.
They are a bunch of Muslim radical, goat herders, stuck in the 8th century. And that is what they will be whether we stay for ten more years, or we pull out tomorrow.
We can't "nation build" there. This country will never be a democracy.
Time to get out.

A few points:

. Wars are best left to Generals and the military who are trained in warfare.
. Anytime the politicians send our troops to war, there should be one primary goal .... to WIN. Not a draw, not a half hearted attempt and not restricted with one arm tied behind their back but to use whatever means at their disposal to WIN! When anything less is on the table, may as well surrender.
If given specific direction as to what winning is, you are substantially correct. To go back to your Korean reference, what was winning? McArther seems to have convinced the weak-kneed Truman that winning was not just liberating South Korea from the North Korean invasion, but it also included the liberation of North Korea from its communist government. They both were fully aware that China had stated that it would intercede were this to be attempted. Absent nukes (and maybe even with them), there was no realistic path to a military victory over China.
In this case, the military leadership on scene was dead wrong, and a political intervention was necessary.
To refine your statement, if I may.
Fighting is best left to those who are trained to fight.
Wars, however, are political events, and those who fight the wars must be given clear objectives.0 -
