Thompson said the bill would be bipartisan, but declined to reveal the GOP sponsors of the measure at this time.
The Democratic proposal would require federal background checks on all gun sales, including private transactions. There will be some small exemptions to those checks, such as transfers between family members, or temporary use of a gun for hunting. Gun-control groups estimate that roughly one-fifth or more of gun sales don't include background checks.
Thompson, Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) and more than 200 other House lawmakers ? including 14 Republicans ? introduced similar legislation in November 2017, but it went nowhere.
But with a Democratic majority in the House now, passage of the bill is nearly guaranteed, and marks the first major congressional action on gun control in years.
However, Senate Republicans will almost certainly refuse to act on the bill, with support from the National Rifle Association for their position. And President Donald Trump closely aligned himself with the NRA and gun-rights groups during the last election.

Wonder what will be different about it. Already in this state all Sales have to have one even face to face. Since the Feds are now involved what will be the increased cost of doing these.

The DEMONrats have already addressed this,,they will demand 100% of all firearms in America be registered. Like they did full auto years back,,if you do not register you guns you are immediately a criminal with an illegal weapon,,if you do register them ,,then the background check will move the registration to the new owner when sold,,, That is what the plan has always been,,to know where every firearm is so when they get enough votes to confiscate all of them0 -

any odds on them rolling in a few "victims " including Gabby to get the sympathy + the buzzed head It that became there poster child was doing all the school shooting
but at the same time not inviting the countless would have been a victim and families that a firearm saved there life or a loved one by even just scaring away the bad guy/girl not counting the ones with bullet holes from legal gun owners
if me I would have 200 to 1 ( or there sworn statement ))for every victim they produce to counter in the same meeting
they also want to go to popular vote so cal, NYC and the other large brain washed lefts can elect the president screw the rest of the country0 -

I own a bunch of guns and have a C&R FFL but live in an area that doesn't issue CCWs - as in, zero for the entire city and county. Why should I have to submit to a background check? Does someone suppose that being checked before buying a bolt action rifle somehow makes society safe when there are half a dozen ARs, FALs, a 1918 BAR and such stashed away in the gun room?
You hit on a good point though and that is actually getting something in return for giving, even if it's something I'm not on board with. And that means the anti-gun folks will never go for it, because their version (and one gunowners seem to fall into the trap of) of compromise is "this is what you'll give up" and get nothing back.
All gunowners have to do is say "OK, we'll agree to that and you'll give us this" and the dealing will end. Which all in all is fine with me.0 -
I'm all for "Gun Violence Prevention" to me it is the unjustifiable shooting of another person. I am also for stopping the unjustifiable stabbings, strangulation's, beatings, robberies and assaults upon other people.
A gun is a good way to prevent those in the second sentence.0 -

They can jump up and down screaming about universal back ground checks, but it's unlikely they'll get 'em.
There's a reason why Brady only effects those that manufacture, distribute, and sell firearms and it's the Commerce Clause of the Constitution. I have no doubt that if they could have done it, at the time they passed Brady, they would have but for that.
Same thing happened with the Clinton AW ban. It had no effect on individuals, only those of us engaged in interstate commerce.0 -
Illinois has this already. Basically is sort of makes you do some of the same record keeping as a FFL.

You have to verify buyer has a valid Firearms Owner ID on the State
Police website, follow the waiting period, then keep record of the sale for 10 years.
I do not live in IL anymore but still follow the same process for private sales. I don't need a gun with my name on a FFL record showing up in a crime scene without a record of me selling it.0 -
We have the Background check for Individuals here in Oregon. But most Sheriffs have said they will not enforce it. Even the one in Eugene. 0 -
