I bought a boat today!!
Kinda still cant believe it, but I pulled the trigger on a sailboat today!
I cant go pick it up til Saturday, but then she'll be all mine. No pics of my own to share yet, but heres a link to the add so ya can check it out if ya wanna see it.

Hopefully all over the Great Lakes! The closest cities to launch from are South Haven Michigan or St Joseph Michigan.0 -

People say that all the time, but I dont get it? I bought an old speed boat 4 years ago, and we have had a few repairs and things to fix.....but I have ran the snot outta that thing and we have loved every minute. My kids ski, tube and wakeboard like its goin outta style.
The problem with my 16 1\2 foot speedboat is, when we get past the pier heads into lake Michigan we just dont feel like we can REALLY get out into the lake. Just putter around near the shore and float.
Hopefully now, we can actually get out into the lake, raise the sails, and let her go in the winds.0 -

Your boat is bigger than two of the boats Adrian Hayter, New Zealand adventurer, took around the world, but the author of the article said your boat is not intended for blue water sailing. He appears to know what he?s talking about so I would take him at his word.0 -

A word to the wise, you want to sail into the 'winds' (up wind) from the start. That way when everyone is 'tired' of sailing, you sail 'with the wind', quickly back to port.0 -

Owned 3 different sailboats. First one was a trailerable 19' Hunter which we grew tired of quickly. Lot of time spent mounting the mast, etc. prior to launch and then the reverse in collapsing the mast and preparing to leave.
2nd one was a Beneteau 245 which we kept in a slip at Greers Ferry lake in Arkansas.
Our last one was a Beneteau 285 which was a marvelous sailboat. Had all the amenities (head with shower, gas range, nav station w/radio, auxiliary diesel engine, roller furling sails).
Lots of great memories. Nothing more enjoyable and relaxing than sailing. Congrats!0 -

We faced a similar situation 35 years ago with a 22' McGregor, almost a carbon copy of your boat. Took a class on sailing and general maritime knowledge which helped a great deal. Very easy to get in big trouble with a sailboat if you do not keep a constant eye on weather, and especially wind direction and speed. Getting caught out on big water in a storm is not fun, even though sailboats are more seaworthy than most. Don't get too far from safe harbor until you get a fair amount of experience as you can't power your way out of trouble with a small outboard. We also invested in a Genoa, which is larger than the mainsail and attaches to the forward rigging. Controlling that power, which is immense, and keeping the boat heeled over at 45 degrees while doing it is an addictive experience. We no longer have the boat but sure have a ton of memories.
