Snow Storm Dilemma
I am in west Texas tonight headed for El Paso. Scheduled to return to Greer SC Saturday night, and get into my Nissan and go home.
A storm is brewing, Marshall NC will get 10 inches of snow starting Saturday, and on in to Sunday and Monday. For us Rebels this is a big snow storm.
Also, this might be an ice storm for Greer.
If a big ice storm hits Greer SC, I 85 will be shut down. The Rebels can't drive in the snow and there will be wrecks galore.
So I may not even make Greer on Saturday. If I do I really want to go home to enjoy the storm. I have a 4WD Nissan Frontier and some shiny, new Nokian Hakkepelliitta studded snow tires.
I have the most snow-capable vehicle in the state of North Carolina.
However, if, Saturday night, there is a 19 vehicle collision on I 26 headed up the mountain to go home, the State Patrol will close the road and I will not be able to get by.
So I am trying to get back early as possible Saturday so I can drive up the mountains to my mountaintop getaway, and I hope to be sitting in my log cabin on Sunday, putting a log in the wood stove and sipping a beer.

I understand your position, being just a bit north of you on the Blue Ridge. Our snow should arrive a few hours after you depending on the storms speed north eastward. They are saying 6-18" depending on track...if we're gonna get 6" I'd just assume we get atleast 12". If this in fact occurs this is an indicator of what kind of winter we're fixing to have!!! My F150 might actually get a work out. My have to leave the car at home and drive my truck into work! 0 -
Allen, If the going gets to ruff, take a right at the Georgia boarder on I-75 and come down to Florida to exit 321. There is lots of parking with no cars or trucks with rvs attached. You can pull up a chair and turn my fireplace on with a remote and watch the flames to your hearts content. You won?t even have to put more logs on the fire. Our door is always open to you.
Added - I forgot to tell you that the neighbor girls should be home soon for Christmas break. They like to lay around the pool in bikinis working on their tans. You might have to help them check for tan lines....0 -

If you had 500 pounds of sand bags over the rear wheels, then maybe it would be the most capable etc., but since you don't come here, sit by the pellet stove with me and watch the rain falling in the desert. Oh, I have Yeungling. 0 -

We are supposed to get about 5". I doubt it will stay long but it will make everyone go crazy this weekend.
DOT will start salting the road probably this evening, school will be canceled all next week, there will be no milk or bread in the stores and there will be lines to get gas.............

Pack some jerky, biscuits and water. Might toss in a a shovel to load the back of that Nissan with snow for weight. 0 -
I'll trade you this lake-effect stuff we're getting right now.
There's a foot, or better, on the ground already and it is still coming down at 2"-4" an hour.

My schedule has changed. Stuck in El Paso tonight, will roll tomorrow.
So will arrive in Greer SC Sunday at noon.
Forecast has changed. By noon Sunday Greer may be in the middle of a big ice storm. One quarter inch of ice and I 85 will be shut down.
I 85 is a very busy road. The jam will go for 35 miles.
If that is going on I won't even try to get into South Carolina, will hole up south of Atlanta and see what happens. Got a good truck stop on the Alabama/Ga line that has burritos and beer, screw it not a bad place to hole up for a couple days.
See, if I 85 is closed in South Carolina, it is 100 miles from Atlanta to the SC border, if you go north of Atlanta there wouldn't be room to park a bicycle at any truck stop north of Atlanta. Screw all that traffic and jams.
However if I 85 does not ice up I can get to my terminal in Greer.
But then have to drive up the mountains in the Nissan.
There will be lots of snow on the roads in NC by Sunday afternoon, I can drive through any of it, but not if the roads are all blocked with massive wrecks.
Several guys have suggested weight in the back. I guess that might help but I have driven another 4WD Nissan pickup in snow with the studded tires and it did great.
Well I will tell y'all this if I can get to the home terminal on Sunday I will sure as hell crank up the Nissan and try to get home.
Also, some of y'all in Yankeeland who are getting 2 feet of snow, etc. I understand you are more used to snow than us Rebels.
But, how would you like to go up a 3/4 mile long driveway that climbs 528 feet in elevation up the mountain, in a foot of snow.0 -

Snow isn't that hard to drive in....it's that ice underneath that causes the problem. Mush more common in the South. That's why it looks like y'all can't drive in snow. It's not the snow....it's the ice.
Studs are the only way to go on the ice.0 -
Really for a change hoping for good weather at Christmas. Planing to head to Calif to see my son and Family. But snow in the passes could stop me. My little car does not do good in snow its too low.
Around here I would just drive my truck but a trip to Calif would break the bank in it.0 -

Latest forecast has 18-20" for W/NC. (Boone, NC, Mtn. City, TN)
Picked up extra beer, and a Family Filler from the new KFC on the way home. Plenty of firewood. I'm set.

I would go this route.
Had a load of gravel 3/4 plus so none was flying out like happens with sand. Just as a last resort safety get a bag of the old style kitty litter(unused of course) for when You stop on an incline and cannot get going again. Have a bag in the truck and car. During the summer its available to clean up oil spill in the garage.[8D]0 -
We don't have a snow problem in Tennessee because Al Gore has brought Global Warming to our State. The snow will remain in the North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina. That is an inconvenient idiot.[:D] 0 -

I would say my schedule has changed, except, I am not on a schedule.
I didn't get a load to Greer out of El Paso, I got a load to Laredo.
I am in Eagle Pass Texas tonight. Damn crowded Pilot hard to park.
So will leave Laredo tomorrow, Saturday, and head back home on Saturday.
Will be on line to arrive in Greer Monday at noon. Most of the storm will be over by then there is a good chance I can drive the big truck into Greer.
But then I have to navigate over the mountains and back to my mountaintop retreat west of Asheville.
I know the interstate route I 26 is treacherous because if there are a few good wrecks State Patrol will just close the road.
I have a route mapped out to take US highways and back roads all the way to Asheville, from there, it is a hop skip and a jump back to my log cabin.
I may take y'alls advice and put weight in the pickup. If nothing else I may stop in Asheville and buy 12 concrete blocks, they are 30 pounds apiece. If there is 12 inches of snow on my long driveway that weight would come in handy. I need, dammit, chains with chains on I can drive up that driveway in any condition.0 -

Yes I made it home. I hauled ass as much as possible, and arrived at my terminal in Greer SC on Monday night at 7. Believe me I had been checking the weather on my computer for the previous two days.
Greer never got shut down due to ice although, they did get 3 inches of snow, which is a blizzard for Greer. But those roads were open.
But, I 26 running up the mountain to Asheville NC had gotten 14 inches of snow. But, thank God, by Monday night I 26 was open.
So all I had to do was drive up my driveway, which goes up the steep mountain and is 3/4 mile long.
I had gotten up at 4 that morning to inspect my truck with the flashlight, I had started driving right at 5 am, so I am gonna arrive at the driveway at 9 pm after 17 hours of work.
Tough job.
So, I really wanted to get up that driveway. I knew there were 11 inches of snow on the driveway.
Now, I have shiny new studded snow tires made in Finland but don't have chains. Some of y'all had suggested putting weight in the bed.
That seemed like a good idea to me damn, I did not want to have to hike that driveway at night in the snow.
So, I figured, snow is the problem, snow is the solution.
I stopped at the Corner Pantry 15 miles from home, they had plowed the parking lot and the snow was 3 feet deep. I picked up big chunks of snow and ice, 40 pound chunks, 60 pound chunks, I loaded up with 400 pounds of snow! I ran up that damn driveway at 15 mph.
I did a little slipping and sliding but made it ok. Thanks for the tip about weight in the back.
