The proverbial rite of passage achieved by my son
North Dakota has a special youth only deer season which started Friday, my boy has been so excited for this to come. It is doe only for this first year. Well, he was STOKED when we got this taken care of just minutes after we got settled in the stand tonight.
We sat around two hours Friday night and nothing came by so I was worried we were going to get blanked again tonight. Shot out of stand we built a few years back behind the trees behind my house. Shot it shortly after 6 and took about 2 hours to get it all gutted, skinned and deboned.

I've had the honor of being present for all 3 of my kids' first deer, all 3 Grandkid's first deer, and 1/2 dozen other non-family members' first deer.
In addition, I've helped some kids who might have not seen another year of life get their first deer. It's an exceptionally emotional moment when you see a terminally ill, crippled, or blind child lay hands on that animal.0 -

He is 11 years old.
The gun is a Ruger American 243 with a Vortex Crossfire 3-9x40 shooting Hornady AW 100gr. The distance was crazy short, around 15 yards. I have corn planted behind my house so there isn't alot of room back there right now.
We sighted it in at 75yds thinking that was going to be about normal distance for him. We had several places we were going to hunt but the wind has been blowing about 30mph everyday so we went to our main stand since it was out of the wind.
We hadn't even loaded his gun yet when she came walking by as we had just crawled up there.
His shot was just slightly aft of perfect but given the rush it went well. We found her about 30yds away is all.0 -

that is the essence of hunting. the older I get the more I enjoy one of the younger kids/guys getting a deer. I have even passed on a few bucks the last few years as I knew they were headed towards one of the younger in our hunting group. to me it was just a little more meat in the freezer, to them it was a BUCK those smiles are worth it 0 -
