new old safe
my youngest son found and bought a older "bank safe" as listed gave 150.00 on c-list (was asking 200.00 )
suppose to weight 3000 lbs per the old owner , my son and a buddy brought it home last night , he told me no doubt on the weight after moving it [:0]
its 84" tall 5' wide 3' deep . should be a great safe for him

double door on feet?? 0 -
I think its a single door I did not ask same with having feet I think it sits flat on the floor I have not seen it only what he told me when he stopped by earlier

Please tell me it opens - that you have keys and combos and verified function after unloading...

Never happened to me but people swear they find neat stuff in old safes - that nobody can open (I guess some manufacturers can provide records based on ser# - or that some specialists can open and reset / rekey safes without damage)

combination lock and it works . inside stripped clean no shelf's or lining
he is trying to deal on one ( smaller ) the same fellow has the lock is bad said if you lock it the dial does not always work they are bickering on price I think the fellow wants 125 my son is offering 50 since it does not work as it should
I am in the same group of no luck , I have never found any thing of value in a locked box or taped to bottom of cabinet / dresser drawers [:(] or any other hide out people use

Here's a trick I learned with fussy combos. Hold a little pressure on the dial in towards the door and make smooth continuous turns between the numbers. Also, some older locks have a relocker spring that may be out of place. 0 -
I bought an old document safe off a guy years back. It was fire resistant with double doors and had a weight of approximately 1300 pounds. Dial combo safe made in the late 30's .
When I had to move into an apartment I put it along with other items in storage. After some time passed I decided to sell it on eBay. It sold for $200 . The guy was from the next state over and we made arrangements for the time to pick it up. I mentioned he best bring some help when he comes to load it.
He said he had a heavy duty pickup with a good set of heavy duty ramps, straps, and a come-along and that he thought he could handle it himself.
The safe was on steel casters so could be rolled across the cement up to the door opening. He must have changed his mind as he had his son of perhaps 14 and a friend along. He backed up by the door and set up the ramps. Then tipped the safe onto the ramps. So far so good.
He gets out his straps and come-along and realized his straps are to short to go around the safe from top to bottom. No problem, I showed him where I had a set of log chains in the storage unit.
He gets the chain around the safe and sets up a chain hooking the ends into the front set square hole in the top of the bed. Come-along was hooked up and he begins to lever on it. It gets tight, then tighter and tighter. The safe isn't moving. I watch from my van as the sides of his truck bed (near new truck) start to flex and bend the side panels. I yell out to him what is going on and suggest he runs the chain between his cab and bed and secure it to the frame of the truck. Also to buffer the area of the front of the bed with wood to prevent damage there.
After re-doing the hook up in this manner they still had a problem moving the safe up the ramps which had bent. Finally using a car jack they managed to lift the safe enough to place some 2X4's under the bottom of the safe, and having the two men lifting all they could on the base with the kid running the come-along they managed to get the safe up the ramp and loaded. It took well over an hour, and he had sprung both side panels on the bed of his nice truck.
First - I am disabled and could not assist. Second - always bring help when moving something that weights over a 1000 pounds, Third - never overestimate your ability, or the ability of you equipment.
Just thought I would share. ( I wonder how much damage he did to his truck and ramps ?)0 -
Moving a large safe is not for the careless. I've done it a few times and follow these simple rules:
1) use a kickback dolly rated for more than safe,
2) properly secure safe to dolly,
3) have a helper who is savvy,
4) make sure the floor is strong enough and surface is protected,
5) try to use ramps not steps,
6) communicate then go slowly and with purpose,
7) ALWAYS have an out in case the safe shifts towards you or your helper.
Kept me "safe" so far.0 -
My antique double door safe weighs around 2000 pounds.
When I have to move it, I take the doors off. They each weigh about 400 pounds.
Makes it much easier!0 -
I have gotten 3 safes like that free from others who tried to move them an failed. like scooterdriver an merlinn state all great point to due. doors come off with used of floor jack. Use tired to lay on floor of trailer when we had to drop tall 7footer on to trailer. Lots of cribbing lots of straps, safety first. 0
