Wasp traps

Pretty good morning here at the Yellow Jacket Hotel...

Little sucker are trailing me. When I had the HD being painted the Painter got hit by a yellow jacket.

They seem to like hot places - the hotter the better. Inside a metal lamp post, transformer box, car trunk, attic... They'll nest there. 0 -
We tried a couple of the bag type (made just across the line in Spokane, WA) and they are excellent. We have both the type you show and the bags, and I would estimate that a bag will collect 2 yellow jackets or wasps for every one the hard plastic type does.
It has been 100?+ here the last couple of days and both the yellow jackets and wasps have only been active in the mornings and later in the evening once it cools down. This year has been the worst I have seen as far as number of the little buggers.0 -
I think that the cooler, more humid air in the morning makes the attractant more effective. Much like it is for hunting dogs. 0 -
As a kid I would fish the YJ grubs.
To find the next I had two methods, the first was to have my uncle dust the ones that came to a bit of beer on the table with flour.
I would watch til I couldn't see it then go stand an follow the next one further.
Works real good because it seems they all use the same flight path.
The other way was to have small bit of white napkin beer soaked, they will pick it up and fly straight home.
Easy doings tracking a bee across the yard while it's carryn a flag.
Then the digging best down at night or real early before they leave.
Road flares did wonder at keeping them alsleep.0
