GB seller making false claims! Tell him?
This is a reputable seller and not known to do this intentionally but the fact is he is claiming something that is without any doubt wrong, false just not true
Should I email him on the auction and let him know?
When WWII ended 2 factories making Mausers were outside of Germany.
The 2 factories in Czechoslovakia made K98ks during the war.
When the war ended there were rifles in various stages of completion and loads of parts to assemble more
The only thing they were short of on parts were trigger guards and the Czechs made a simplified version to be able to complete more rifles.
These trigger guards became known as "Winter Trigger guards" because the larger opening. They are not German
Rifles that had German markings were not always scrubbed of them.
So, how do we know if a DOT or DOU 45 K98k was actually a late war unissued rifle or a Czech assembled post war version?
The proof marks.
If they have German WaA proofs, the entire gun with no other proofs, it can be considered a late war gun.
If the rifle has many German markings but has Czech proofs it is a post war rifle no ifs ands or buts and to claim it is a late war K98k is a lie, a fraud or maybe a mistake made in ignorance.
This is being discussed on the Mauser boards now.
I normally do not say anything directly to buyers or sellers but this is simply wrong and I feel the seller may face legal action if the buyer finds out he bought a post war parts gun and not a late war German K98k.
Should I let the buyer know and link him to the discussions or being I have no dog in this hunt just mind my own business?

We all make mistakes and no one knows everything about all guns. I try
to research all of the items I list but sometimes I get things wrong and sometimes I will get a polite email informing me of my mistake and I am always appreciative and let the writer know that.0 -
I would inform him. If he persists with the false claim then he is a shyster, but if reputable he will change his description and thank you for the information as we strive to learn something new everyday. 0 -

This will be interesting.
This gun is worth 5 maybe 600.
Because it is listed as a late war matching K98k the bid is now over $2K
I once thought I bought a very rare 1936 all matching Erma. The authors of the 3 book series on K98ks could not even find one to photograph for their book it was that rare.
Someone contacted me asking to buy it (I had not even offered to sell this mind you). He offered $3600.00
Well, turns out the bolt had been renumbered. Nice job, but no doubt a humped gun.
Buyer contacted me and I gave him a full refund. We both saw what we wanted to see and there was never any ill intent
I got the gun back took it to a gun show offered it for $1,100.00 what a mismatched bolt 36 Erma was worth and the buyer said I was wrong it was matching and the local "Experten" said I was an idiot for selling that so cheap but I told the guy it was altered but he saw what he wanted..

I would politely point it out to him. We all make mistakes and some of us don't have the expertise , like others. I am amazed at all the new stuff, I am constantly learning about firearms, and you just taught me something new today.[^] 0 -

I sent him a message with a link to the thread on the forum discussing this Mauser.
I did not link that discussion here because that is a rare site that allows active auction links to be posted and discussed. That would be a work around of the rules here and not in the spirit of the intent on GB. I can post the name of the web site if that is OK, LMK if it is

I've had some things brought to me with a long story explaining the history of how it came to exist and it all seemed to be beyond question, plus coming from people that have been around as long as the moon dealing with guns before my own parents were born. Then, you learn a few details and your world is upside down. Its like learning Santa isn't real. You wake up and the guy that knows EVERYTHING about every firearm that was ever made is wrong about something. Whats even harder is when you have to walk up to Santa and tell him he's delusional. 0 -

I had a client of mine tell me he discovered and unknown unsigned work of a major artist. If he was proved correct it was worth 80K. It took him two years to get in front of the absolute expert on the painter. It was not a work of his declared the expert. My client said to me. The expert is old when he is gone I'll have a try with the next guy up. 0 -
I emailed the seller and this was his reply:
Hi, I agree with you and have had plenty of these guns over the years, but this one is a little different. It's mainly German proofed. I think it's a left over rifle that the Czechs stamped a proof on the receiver
I responded with this:
This one has more German parts and was closer to being a German rifle than most but it was assembled and proofed by the Czechs so it is not a German late war rifle. It is a post war rifle
Good luck if the buyer finds that out
His belief is while admitting it is Czech proofed it is still a late war rifle.
He may believe that but the fact is it is a post was Czech rifle and he is risking his reputation0 -
