Federal gold medal match. Factory seconds
Made a bit of a road trip to Grice gun shop in clearfield pa. They had a whole isle of federal factory seconds. Mostly in 270 but some in 308.
The two loadings they had we're 165 tactical bonded soft point. I almost got a few boxes for hunting ammo but the tactical label had me thinking it wouldn't expand enough?? The second was 7.62x51 175gr bthp gold medal match. Should work nicly in my m1a[:D]
Being factory seconds I'm mildly concerned. Getting home and looking at them the bullets all appear identical with no noticable blemishes, the cases look like their reloaded or at least not properly cleaned. The cases are not shiney, they look old and dull with some light discoloration spots. Though you can clearly see the annealing around the neck and shoulder.
I bought 2 boxes of the 7.62 to try out. A good deal at $19.99?

Saved what $10 a box? I do wonder what make them second? Charlie had a rough weekend and the test lot didn't hit the "X" ring? 0 -
Just did a search on ammo seek and saw one place had them for 16.99 a box[B)].
19.99 is still probably cheaper with shipping tho.0 -
SPS, or Shooters Pro Shop is the store front for Nosler bullets. They sell a ton of ammo, brass and bullets all made by Nosler. They state that the products that they sell have some cosmetic blemishes that are not first rate. They also sell the factory over runs. They claim that the products that they sell work as well as the first rate stuff. I've ordered a bunch from them over the past few years, and have never had one issue with anything. I have shot 1000?s of Hornady 2nds with out an issue. Normally is is cosmetic issue with either the round or the box. 0 -
I would feel confident shooting that stuff. Federal is not going to knowingly send ammo out the door, with their name on it that has any structural defects. Factory sends are likely cosmetic irregularities the preclude those rounds for being considered "premium". That 165 Tactical bonded is likely marketed to come out of a Remington 700 and travel through some bad guy's nasopalantine. Those shooters likely frown on frosted or corroded cases. [;)] 0 -
Years ago, I purchased a load of 5.56 nato ammo seconds.
It shot just as good as the same lots that were accepted by the US
Army.
Found out later, that the US ammo manufacturer "mistakenly" left
off the sealer around the primer, so they could sell them as seconds.
Could just image the assembly line talk...."...shut the valve...
