Didn't want to hijack the other thread as it isn't the place for this discussion, and it also might not pertain directly, but wanted to comment on this:

There exists a point in medicine where the chances of any appreciable recovery from neurological standpoint are exhausted. The patient will with a high degree of certainty never recover, and that can be patently obvious the day of the original problem or days/weeks/months later. Once that point is reached, how long would you advocate keeping the pt "alive"(as some would define it, but not I) via machine alone(at tremendous expense, both to the family and the system at large), not to mention prolonging grieving process?
It really doesn't have to do with the socialization of medicine, but with resource management and the difficult but correct application of good medicine, at least imnsho.
