Humidity ?

I have worked on things my whole life. Thats the only jobs i ever had. However back then i had never worked with wood.

When i got married 16 to 18 years ago i built my shop at my wifes house.

I built it to tight and from day 1 it sweated on the inside. I could open the drawer on a tool box and find condensation on the tools. In the rafters and the overhang i closed it all off thinking that building it tight was better. It was not.

In March my friend and i built a new shop and it has about a 6 or 8 inch overhang on the roof to the wall.

Coming off the roof i have facial boards but between the facial boards and the wall i have nothing there.

Living in NC we have lots of humidity.

What would be the best way to help control humidity without spending big money?

    Buy a dehumidifier off a yard sale plumb it up to dump outside easy fix I paid $20 for mine. I am just down the road in Goldsboro so I understand the humidity

    I just lost a garage to a dehumidifier and all contents
    fire dept told me they had 5 due to them ( and this is a small area ) insurance agent told me countless fires and law suits just his company had well over 500k filed against them ( manufacture ) told me most are made on the same line in china and just change the housing to what ever the box store wants . also countless fires and lost lifes and houses due to them
    if you buy one I would check the internet for a list on recall or know bad
    the one we had was about a year old . we have one in the house 20+ years old ran year round but I stopped using it also just do not trust them after hearing the stories

    i have two in basement and one in lakehouse ...checked out the reviews and bought Friedrich DP70 with dump, hose, and pump ..two at home on now 2+ years and shut off lake place to save elec when not there...no problems yet and all have worked great..would not buy a used one....dealer sent one defective from get go and replaced it and my shipping cost to service center very fast +++

    I guess moving to New Mexico would be the big bucks solution, so second or third the dehumidifier, either pipe it out or to a drain. Had one in the basement in MO for years, drained right into the floor drain.

    Start with roof vents.

    A humidifier, like any other appliance with a compressor, should plug directly into a permanent outlet. (A 20 amp line would be best.) Never use a humidifier on an extension cord or power strip.

    Don't store combustibles within 36" of a humidifier.

    These are all great solutions but, what is causing all this moisture in the first place??? Maybe better off to determine this and then attempt to prevent it?

    It's a garage/shop...that is located IN THE SOUTHEAST. That's why its humid.

    Unless he builds it tight like a house and installs an AC unit/dehumidifier of some kind, he will always have humidity.
