California Fires - Gun Safe Stories? Anyone?
I know the state is not a friend of the 2A, but are there any locals thataway who have heard of any gun safes surviving the various epic fires?
It wouldn't make national news, but when in doubt, ask GunBroker.[8D]
I've seen a good bit of news footage, but nothing in the debris field resembles a safe.
Has anyone here seen first-hand a safe survivor elsewhere?

A few weeks back a couple in Kal. ( famous people but not to me sorry I do not recall but I would bet easy to find on the internet )
any way they lost it all..they had there life savings and collectibles in the home safe(s) did not trust banks
was on Tv reporting nothing survived just ashes and burnt material left in there safes I think they posted a photo also
they are only fire rated for a short time and level of heat even then they may get hot enough to destroy any items inside

Fire proof needs to be AIR TIGHT almost to the extreme. No oxygen, no burning just don't open until it is cooled. How the safe can be kept air tight during the intense heat of a wild fire fed by winds is the million dollar question. 0 -
Just saw some pics of the inside of a "fireproof" safe that went through the Redding fire. AR's were puddles of melted aluminum, and the wood stocks were burned off the guns. 0 -

Fire Chief told me not to waste money on fireproofing. If they dont get water on in in first 20 minutes forget it. 0 -
Not teally sure if it matters- but I have seen a handful of people on FB show totally destroyed homes but their Big Green Egg grills still usable. Of course they are ceramic and designed to hold heat... 0 -
I will add in I have seen some safe company ( do not recall the name ) advertising theirs as a safe to lock up guns what a safe is for . and don't waste your money on a fire proof model

I have a friend who is a Fireman and he told me he has never seen a Gun Safe protect a gun from damage in a house fire. 0 -
The correct term for a safe is "Fire RESISTIVE" They are designed to protect PAPER documents for a rated period of time by giving off moisture from the safe lining that becomes steam inside the safe. If safe lining has zero moisture, then fire resistance drops to whatever insulation value material has- which is not a lot. They do not protect computer media worth a hoot unless you bought one designed for media storage.
And most gun "safes" do not come close to the mass of metal found in a commercial high quality safe. Like a 3 hr Tann or Chubb TRTLEX rated safe. You are also not spending $7-15 grand on the gun safe.
Bottom line- worried about fire/flood? Buy insurance.0 -

Oddly enough my safe says it is fire resistant for 45 min at @1200 degrees.... I think fire resistance is the more appropriate term. It is there to buy a little time for the fire department or home owner to get a Hose on the area.
My safe does have a heat activated seal around the door that swells when it reaches around 200 degrees which will not harm quality guns. I do have, inside the safe, another smaller safe that is rated against fire and water for a much longer time period and has extremely thick walls, it is designed to help protect electronics.... Obviously the criticall paper work goes in that. I don't store ammo in the safe. I always thought that was a bad idea.
Edit: of course, if a wild Fire consumes the home, and my family is safely out of the home, I do not expect the fire department to risk life and limb for it...that's why I have insurance :-)0
