this just happened to me sabatage

guys this is more of a heads up about being careful when you buy a firearm modern or relic.. I went to the wannemacher gun show today and bought a Mossberg 500. that was broken and missing some parts. I brought it home and started stripping it down to see what was missing or broken. pulled the barrel and trigger group. wedged behind the bolt with the primer pointing forward was a live 9mm round. the bullet facing the shooters face if the action was cycled. it might have popped. if that doesn't scare you I don't know what will. there is no way this was done accidentaly. someone pulled the pin and slipped a round behind the bolt after pulling the trigger group.. all the actions were tied so they couldn't be racked but this was done by someone wanting to hurt someone

    My wag is that some paranoid loser did this to nail somebody who was stealing his stuff - kind of like a booby trap...

    That's stupid and illegal.

    The story I want to hear is were did the dealer get it - and why did he not inspect it or examine it or clean it or attempt to discover what was wrong with it...

    I would go the the event organizer with pictures and the gun - and the phrase "I don't want to have to call the police or the batfe" would be ready to go when resistance becomes apparent.

    And just my opinion but absent a chamber or pressure vessel while the primer might ignite I can't see the bullet doing a ton of damage - though I would expect small parts to fly around near your eyes and face

    Be ready to be called a liar and told to GFYourself.

    Spot on.

    I night go have to tear down a mossy to figure out exactly what you?re describing. I cant visualize what would strike the primer. Totally inexcusable.

    It is inconceivable and abhorrent and despicable.

    In 24+ years of working in a gun shop and as a range safety officer and competitive shooter and instructor and collector...

    I have never once taken possession of or handled a single firearm without checking that it was unloaded or safe

    Not my personal guns not those put into and out of an ffl bound book

    If you cannot open the action or safe check it you disable it and set it aside - you don't hand somebody a grenade with the pin pulled

    It's just plain wrong

    It is asking for trouble

    When I check a gun to see if it?s loaded I check the magazine and/or chamber(s). I almost never take the gun apart to see if some armature has tried to booby-trap it. If this is in fact some numb nut idiot?s attempt to sabotage the shotgun he needs to repeat the bomb making 101 class.

    I very likely would go back and ask questions, but I WOULD NOT threaten the seller with a call to police or BATFE. The only thing that will get you is a damaged reputation before you get home.

    I doubt the seller knew about it.

    One thing about handgun and small rifle ammo, if its not in a barrel and contained by a breach they are not all that powerful. The bullet weighs more than the case and powder so usually the case separates from the bullet without very much velocity, like putting a cartridge in a fire.

    I wouldn't call the batf either, but I would let the seller know what you found but more of a heads up than a threat.

    I said repair to say it - to use it as a positional gambit

    Not to threaten or over react - but as leverage when you are told to take a hike

    Wouldn't surprise me if the shotgun had been messed with by some kid who didnt know any better and tried to load a gun they knew nothing about and somehow got the round back there. Then Dad or whoever thinks his gun must be busted beyond repair and got rid of it with a dealer.

    The dealer got the firearm, saw it was broken, saw the chamber was empty and thought...well I'll just sell it for parts.

    In situations like this, I find stupidity or ignorance is the likely culprit before ill intention.
