M1 rifle ammo

I brought my first m1 rifle home today and can't wait to shoot it. What ammo have you folks shot that you were pleased with? btw this is why I enjoy buying from gunbroker-the rifle was even better than I had hoped. Its like christmas.

    Can regular, 150 grain, ammo be used is this rifle? Does it have to be FMJ?

    Not sure what you mean by regular ammo....I've shot 150grain to 175 grain ammo, including fmj and soft points all with no issues in a PROPERLY LUBRICATED M-1 rifle (i.e. good grease, not oil).

    I would not reccomend solid lead only bullets just because of fouling issues.

    If you run heavier modern ammo look into a gas plug of some kind to keep your pressure down as that will minimize wear and tear on the rifle. But even with modern powders anything in the 150 range will be just fine.

    For a plug I would reccomend the non adjustable garand gear plug...makes it safe to shoot anything you would want to, is easy peasy to put in, not to expensive, and you dont have to fuss with it when you change ammo.

    WWW.garandgear.com that website has tons of great info about the rifle and plugs and what not.

    If you want to be super conservative though look at the auction side for M-1 specific loads....S&B make some, so does PPU, and American Eagle.

    CMP may have some HXP for sale as well.

    Interestingly, there is an auction site with a name similar to this social media platform that sells ammo.

    This right here. I've seen more than a few bent operating rods from using ammunition loaded to a higher pressure than the rifle was designed for.

    This right here. I've seen more than a few bent operating rods from using ammunition loaded to a higher pressure than the rifle was designed for.


    Interesting enough this is a lot harder to do than most people realize...usually from what I have read, this happens as a result of higher pressure ammo coupled with poor lubrication. So long as he stays with 150 grain pills it may well be close to impossible.
