Guns of Navarone vs. Memphis Belle -
A tough decision. Both excellent movies. Went with Guns of Navarone. A true classic. Excellent cast.

local here who passed away several years ago was a pilot who flew off the grass strips into Germany in WW2...he was the oldest practicing attorney in Kansas at the time of his death..he was watching a local high school basketball game when he fell over..his boys played years earlier and one was on a state championship team...i asked him about the movie Memphis Belle and he said it was quite close to reality..he had a whole room in his home filled with memorabilia from that time in the service but i did not know this till after he was gone....i missed a rare opportunity to view real history 0 -
My Dad was going to volunteer to be a tail gunner on a B-17. (Pretty much a Death sentence.) He went Airborne instead. Served 32 years. He was a true BA. RIP Dad. (Super proud of you.) 0 -
My Favorite UAAF movie is Twelve O'Clock High, another great movie with Peck in it.
It has a great storyline to it and is a model of leadership.
I love it when he calls in Hugh Marlow and calls him a coward and tells him to paint Leper Colony on this plane[;)]0 -

At Navy LMET (Leadership and Management Education and Training) the film was shown and discussed. It shows several different personnel management styles in use.
Word got around we were sitting around watching old war movies so the instructors had to stop. [xx(]0 -
memphis belle was "hollywood" too much if you really knew the real MB story. the real MB 25th mission was a milkrun, gunners never fired a shot in action. furthermore it wasn't even the first to do 25 missions. 0 -
Hands down it's Guns of Navarone! 0 -
Both are VERY good movies IMHO. Either choice would sure beat the heck out of NFL football!
Gregory Peck is one of my favorite actors. "The Big Country", "Capt. Horacio Hornblower", "To Kill a Mockingbird", "The Yearling", "Twelve O'clock High", and "Guns of Navarone" will provide great entertainment for week!0 -
At the end of the movie...Guns of Navarone...there is a seen of four " British" destroyers in file, sounding their horns saluting the men who destroyed the guns.
The " British " destroyers were portrayed by four Greek Navy destroyer escorts, that were given to Greece by the U.S.
The last ship in line was originally the USS Slater before becoming part of the Greek Navy.
About fifteen or so years ago, the ship was reacquired and brought back to the U.S.
It is now a floating museum that has been slowly restored, and is tied up at a dock on the Hudson River at Albany, New York.
For some reason the ATF made the New York State Military Museum keep all the big guns on the museum's firearms collections catalog.
I actually had to go down to the ship once a year and inventory the guns.....silly
At the time....the restoration crew were replacing all instrument panel nomenclature that was in Greek with English...0 -
