Winchester M70 Pre 64

Has anyone ever seen a unchecked steel butt plate od a pre64 M70 Rifle???

  I have not. All Were checkered and had a diamond pattern around the bottom screw hole.
  
  I think Winchester made some with a recoil pad from the factory these were magnum guns and I think that were a later build(Late 50's).

  Per Roger Rule's book, checkered steel until early 1959 and "composition" after that. But, where Winchester was concerned, it's hard to say always or never. They were good about using up stuff they had in stock and they would also do most anything for you if you paid for it. Having said that, if your rifle has a smooth, non-checkered butt plate, it most likely didn't come from the factory that way.
