My guess is they didn't.
The .280 might have been not quite "mainstream" enough to warrant the tooling required.0 -
I have one in 7x57 (original barrel with Savage markings). That would be much less mainstream than .280. I also have a Marlin MR7 in .280. That rifle itself is out of the mainstream; let alone the chambering.

One of my favorite purchases in the last year or so, is a Savage 110 in .270. A .270 caliber specific 3-12X40 BDC scope was added (Cabela's made for them by Nikon.) along with some custom work to get it to fit the Leupold Steel rings that came with the gun. (The scope adjustment ring would not clear the rear scope mount base.)
I love this gun.

I see at least four different current Savage model 110's chambered for the .280 Ackley Improved but no plain .280 Remington. 0 -
The Ackley improved .280 should be an interesting cartridge. Since it is an "improved" cartridge, you can shoot regular .280 (or 7 express) cartridges in it. 0
