Girl Scouts sue Boy Scouts

The Girl Scouts of the United States of America filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America on Tuesday, after the Boy Scouts decided to drop "Boy" from its namesake program and start welcoming older girls.
The lawsuit in Manhattan federal court is an attempt by the Girl Scouts, founded in 1912, to avert an erosion of its brand and membership as the Boy Scouts, founded two years earlier, tries to reverse its own decades-long membership decline.
Six months ago the Boy Scouts, which accepts children 11 to 17 years old, said it would in February 2019 change its name to Scouts BSA and make girls eligible to earn its highest rank, Eagle Scout.
The organization also launched a "Scout Me In" campaign, which features boys and girls.
Neither the Boy Scouts nor its general counsel responded to requests for comment on the lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages and an injunction against trademark infringement.
The Boy Scouts, based in Irving, Texas, recently had about 2.28 million members, less than half its peak in the 1970s, while the Girl Scouts, based in Manhattan, said it has about 2 million.
In the complaint, the Girl Scouts said the Boy Scouts have no monopoly over such terms as "scouts" and "scouting" when it offers services to girls.
It said the name change threatens to "marginalize" Girl Scouts activities and has already sown confusion, with families, schools and communities nationwide being told the organization no longer exists, or merged with the Boy Scouts.
"Only GSUSA has the right to use the Girl Scouts and Scouts trademarks with leadership development services for girls," and the Boy Scouts infringements are "new and uniquely damaging to GSUSA," the complaint said.
"We did what any brand, company, corporation, or organization would do to protect its intellectual property, the value of its brand in the marketplace, and to defend its good name," the Girl Scouts said in a statement.
The Boy Scouts has said its rebranding was part of a single-name approach it adopted when it decided in October 2017 to let girls enroll in the Cub Scouts, for children 7 to 10 years old.

As a former Eagle Scout and the son of a Scoutmaster and 4 bead woodbadge Scout I say to hell with the BSA.
They folded to PC, I have nothing to do with them and I hope they go by the wayside.0 -

The Girl Scouts have no standing to sue, so this should go nowhere. "Scouts" is not a trademarked name, so good luck with that.
As a former and current Scoutmaster, with only 3 WoodBadge beads, but with about 35+ years in the BSA, I don't care what boys or girls I might be able to work with. It is a bit dismaying to me to see people turn their backs on the BSA because it is changing. It seems to me that it has evolved and changed a lot from the early 1900's to what it is today, and that change didn't happen overnight. BSA has not given in the the PC crowd so much as it is evolving to meet the needs of the youth today- which are different needs from someone who grew up in the 50's or 80's or whenever.
Straight, Not-Straight, male, female, handicapped, disabled, whatever- I would rather see them learn the values of Scouting and experience the joy of Scouting, especially compared to the other many negative distractions that are out there. I suppose that if you think that being Trustworthy, Loyal, etc. is outdated and shouldn't be taught, then walk away from Scouts. If you think learning your "Duty to God, Country, the Scout Law, and self" are not worth learning, then walk away from Scouts. I will stay involved and not give up hope.0 -

Thank you, sir. I love the Boy Scouts. I was a Boy Scout for five years and then an Explorer for 3 more years.
I lived in suburban Atlanta, but in Boy Scouts we went out camping in the wilderness. I loved it.
We hiked the Appalachian Trail, we explored caves in north Georgia.
Scouting was a wonderful experience for me.
Now, alas, scouting has been ruined. You take five, 15 year old boys, and they go camping in the north Georgia woods with five 15 year old girls, Guess What?
Pregnant Girl Scouts. You don't need a Phd in Sociology to figure out this one.

Somewhere, a lot of you are making bad assumptions (project much???) or have received bad information, or you have not taken the time to read the guidelines. It will be difficult for a girl to get pregnant on a campout, considering that the scout troops will not be mixed- there will be boy troops and there will be girl troops, and the leaders of the troops cannot be the same person/people. In other words, they will not be camping together. Further, when the proper Youth Protection guidelines are followed, as they must be, there would never even be the opportunity for sexual escapades of any sort.
At the same time, there are many non-BSA outdoor classes and groups that are co-ed. There are scouting programs for older youth, such as Venturing and Exploring and Sea Scouts, that are co-ed. The majority of the sanctioned worldwide Scouting programs in other countries are co-ed. Yet, somehow, none of them have a problem with girls getting pregnant, or even with them having sex on the side. At summer camp a couple of years ago, there was a girl scout on staff from Europe, maybe Switzerland?? and when she was asked about it, she was puzzled about why camping co-ed was a problem in the U.S., because they were out there to camp and learn, not to have sex.0 -
And when one does get pregnant the parents will sue the boy/girl scouts because they didn't prevent it.
