Emily Greenhouse, a a political writer for Bloomberg, wrote, "Now that Brown is governor, she may choose never to discuss her sexuality publicly, or be about as reluctant as Obama, the first black president, has sometimes been to discuss race."
Brown's appointment to the state's top position comes at a time when bisexual people are fighting for acceptance, the Christian Science Monitor's Brad Knickerbocker wrote: "While happy rights have been expanding at the national and state level, bisexual people - the 'B' in the lesbian, happy, bisexual, transgender community - have had particular challenges."
Brown herself has spoken about the challenges, first in an essay for the collection "Out and Elected in the USA."
Her parents flew in from Minnesota for "the talk," Brown wrote. They told her "it would be much easier for us if you were a lesbian."
She spoke again about the challenges in Breaking Through, a documentary about LGBT politicians.
"I was walking on eggshells the whole time," she said. "Like I couldn't be who I am -- I'm not free to be myself. It feels like you're cutting off your legs or your arms. It feels like you can't be a whole person."
The New York Times' Kirk Johnson said Brown's sexuality likely wouldn't be a big deal in the Pacific Northwest.
"In socially liberal Oregon, her sexual orientation is unlikely to raise much of a fuss, and in some areas, could probably be a plus," Johnson wrote.
"I just learned that she's bisexual, " Portlander Jared Dahle told Johnson. "That's cool."
