I Was In My 20s Before I Knew

I was in my 20s before i knew that my family was not normal. I thought every family was like mine. I never knew how bad until i grew up.

My parents were strict with yes mamm and no mamm that was not an option. If i forgot it was a little pop in my mouth. Not enough to hurt but enough to embarass you.

There were kids houses i could not play at but i could play with there kids. I did not know his dad was a drunk and hit the kids and his wife.

I never heard my Mom and Dad ever raise there voice to each other. My wife and i have been together since 2000 and have never raised or cussed at each other.

My grandfather was a drunk piece of crap that died when i was 7 or so. I do not remember him. My grandmother was the nicest woman i have ever met. She would come get me up for school and cook breakfast for my sister and i.

She would clean our house every day and make my bed. There would be snacks when all the kids came over after school.

I remember having a family reunion and my grandmother asked me David now that you are married are you getting it more now than before.

I laughed at her and said grandma i have never had that problem.

I remember when i got my license i would take her to the grocery store and i was driving a little slow and she asked me if i always drove this slow and i told her no mamm and then she told me to speed up. I told her but grandma if she got hurt everyone would be mad at me. She laughed and told me to speed up.

I cut and racked her yard every week for free but she would always try and pay me. I kept telling her that dad would give me some money but she made me take some anyway.

I never knew my grandmother and parents were special until i left home and was talking to other people about how they grew up and i was amazed.

My sister and i talked about that the other day neither one of us knew how good we had it.
