Lightning strike
It's going to be a long nite. We had several lightning strikes throughout the early evening. It's bone dry out here. We have three fires burning along the ridge line, about a half mile from the house. The fire department is stretched thin with fires at the South end with a fire on the Stead Airport property. We have Reno FD BLM FD and Truckee Meadows FD trying to get a handle on them all. On the plus side I have an engine parked out on the road ready to do what they can if the fire comes closer. We've been told be ready to go.

I remember the fire(s) of '81. Was on tower duty at the prison on graveyard. Watched the fire burn on the ridge into Carson City from Reno. Then the mud slide that brought the side of the mountain down and closed the highway across Washoe flats.

They are making headway. They have moved in a ground crew and bulldozer to cut a line. They have also brought in two water tenders for the engines. The weather is cooperating, almost no winds. 0 -

The fire crew has the fire out and are mopping up. They will leave a small crew in case any hot spots flair up. The Fire South of us at Stead airport is also in the mop up phase.
Twelve miles to the East the Peavine Mountain fires have burned about 400 acres and are about half contained.
Last night has me thinking that I'm going to enlarge my defensible space. We have about 60-65 feet on the front and sides of the house. Our house sets on the back of 11 acres about 40 foot from the rear property line. The land behind the house is an undeveloped 10 or so acres, with thick sage. I'm going to cut out the brush with the backhoe on the other side of the property line at least another 25-30 feet. There is a road access easement through there anyway.
I sure am thankful for the job the fire department did for us out here last night.

I just watched a U Tube channel called Cody's Lab. His family has a ranch in Wyoming, and lightening caused a fire there. 0
