Im Tired Of Snakes

I have seen more this year than the last 5 years combined. I think i have killed 16 to 20 this year. I killed 4 in 1 day.[:(]

I am starting to get paranoid now. Yesterday i was putting receptacles in my shop went to get a drill bit to drill through the studs and about 30 minuets later when i went to put the drill bit back there was a half of a snake skin across the drawer that i got the bit out of.

The skin was about 2 foot long but it was not all there. However the snake was skinny so im hoping it is a black snake.

I need to figure out how to get rid of snakes coming.

any ideas?

    I would say get a Mongoose but those are some dirty little rats.

    I have not seen a mouse in years. However i am surrounded by woods a creek and fields. In the winter 10 years or so ago we would get a mouse in the winter.

    We would get 1 or 2 a year. We have not seen a trace of a mouse in 10 years or so.

    Locate a King snake, that's your best bet......don't feed it at all [;)]. Also a couple of yard geese may be better....great alarms too but you'd have to watch where you step all the time.

    I leave snakes alone. They eat mice and small vermin. I have found that although they startle me they are more happy crawling away than causing me harm.

    If you can,keep a few guinea fowl around the house.See what happens to the snake population then.

    Our ferret kills mice and crickets and snakes and such...

    He has a definite musky smell but I would not call it pungent or stinky...

    He release a spray from glands around the yard maybe once each spring to mark his territory outside but has never done so in the house.

    Think Riki tiki tavi...

    We don't get many snakes but he hates them with a passion.

    That's easy for Northerners to say, people like Dave and myself live in the South (myself, even deeper South) where we have at least 4 that are poisonous, Diamondback rattler, Timber Rattler, Copperhead and water moccasion. Rural Southern kids were and still are raised hearing before going outside "watch for snakes" and "old covered up wells".....to us it's serious threats to life and ones best not ignored [;)]. I've known a few that didn't heed those 2 simple warnings. Most I'll give a pass to but those 4 mentioned are DTR and I don't care what the PC crowd thinks [:)]

    If your asking me, I kill only poisonous, I learned & was taught to I.D them long ago, as I recommend everyone do.... I see more poisonous than any others around here.

    I'm in SW Arkansas, live in the woods 10 miles from town. The only snakes I kill are poisonous ones in the yard near the house. That said, I DID kill a baby copperhead in the kitchen a couple of springs ago. I can identify all the snakes native to our neck of the woods by sight, and will just relocate the harmless ones to the edge of my property. There is a five foot black rat snake currently living in my tool shed, bless his little heart. [:)]

    If you have snakes it is because you are harboring snake food. Get rid of the rodents and the numbers will drop way down. Also close the entry holes. If we are talking barn or dirt floored shed, you are out of luck. Likewise with most wood floors. Otherwise look to places where plumbing, electric and gas enter the building, there is often plenty of room to also admit snakes. There is NO effective snake repellant on the market.

    Get your big girl panties on and stop screaming.

    Dave they are there because you have field mice. I had the same problem, I was killing 2-5 copperheads a week. My dog got bit by one and my wife darn near got bit by one under the garbage can.

    The fist thing I did was get a bunch of mouse traps and I caught a bunch of mice.

    Then I got Black Rat snake from a buddy who caught it in his barn.

    I have only seen one this year except for the black snake. My young dog was barking at it and I shot it with my 38 derringer with rat shot.

    Way back in the late 1800's and early 1900's there were several islands in the Great Lakes that were infested with Missauga sp Rattle snakes (Michigan Rattler's)

    Pigs were introduced to these islands and within a very short time, not a snake was left.

    Pigs eat snakes like an Italian eats spaghetti![:0]

    black rat snake be good snake...and they can climb an oak tree FAST..biggest at our lake place was 5'

    See some moccasins in the swamps behind the house but am far enough away on dry land that they are rarely a problem . Not rattlers or coral snakes in my immediate area . Have to move further south to find them so that just leaves the copperheads to deal with . My outside dog got bitten by one two weeks ago , still have not found him but I keep looking .

    And also considered injurious wildlife, illegal to import without a zoo license.

    I'm rather fond of snakes. Have never felt that primitive panic at the sight of one. I don't have kids or pets, but there are both in my neighborhood, so I'd probably kill a rattler if I saw one. But never have in the 33 years I've lived here, despite having them living in abundance not 200 yards away.

    If you had one or two outside cats the snakes will move on. Not that cats kill snakes, they just make the snakes keep moving on down the road.

    A outside snake dog is also a good thing.
