    The Chinese military ordered the Americans off the plane and took control of it. The investigation report said the crew had hidden some classified materials on the plane and hand-shredded some papers.

    "Therefore, compromise of undestroyed classified material is highly probable," it concluded.

    That was a VQ squadron. Strictly intel gathering. Where that dome on the bottom just aft of the flight station is is where the bombbay is on a VP squadron. VP's are combat squadrons, VQ's are not.

    I doubt the families of those on board would agree with you.

    Nothing on that bird would be worth sacrificing the dozen or so lives on board.

    I flew for two+ years as an aircrewman in VP-4 P2Vs during the Korean bit and there were protocols in place to protect the ECM gear on board.

    I am sure that the crew on board the bird in question did their best to do the same, as noted in the article. The writer made an assumption that sensitive material was acquired by the Chinese.

    The technology was worth not giving the entire bird to our enemies.

    POS cowards have no place in the military.

    You don't hand over a plane like that to the chicoms.

    The plane was still marginally flyable, and there were friendly spots within range.

    I doubt we ever hear a complete accounting of the condition, or what the odds were of making it to a friendly area, but I would suggest that if it were an all male crew, the attempt would have been made.

    I believe that chivalry in the form of the desire to protect the female crew members from a potential ditching is why the contents of that plane were lost.

    I wasn't there. I don't know the condition nor the mindset of the crew. Nothing else makes sense to me.

    That is the generally held view among all the VP'ers I know and why we curse putting women in the air. Bailout would have assured the total destruction and sinking of the aircraft.

    Well, female crew members was not a problem for us ? everyone in the squadron were hairy chested nut scratchers.
