Safety issue ... Hand rails on stairs.

Ever since we moved into this house, there was something always in the back of my mind about the handrails that just wasn't right.

My wife was coming up the stairs and just as she turned loose of the hand rail the bracket broke and the hand rail fell ? fortunately she didn't fall down 14 steps at 84 years old...

Then it dawned on me that the thing that always didn't seem right was that the idiot that put the handrails in only put a bracket at the bottom and only one at the top...NOT SAFE...Fixed it, 4 rail brackets on each side rail...anchored in a stud

If you have stairs check the number of Hand Rail Brackets...one at the bottom and one at the top is not safe.

    Sounds like the builder had them more for decoration than for use.. After I shattered my ankle I have to have a rail,,even in the shower

    "Returns" going back to the wall are a good idea (and code)too.

    They keep you from catching your clothing as you are moving past the end.

    Good heads up advice. Glad your wife did not fall or get hurt.

    khornet is right on. Daughter's home- found builder had used dry wall anchors for rail brackets.
