Knife Sharpening ?
First off i can not sharpen a knife freehand to save my life.
I use a Lanski sharpening set and it does great. I was sharpening my Vertorinox Swiss Army knife and i could not get it sharp using my 1000 grit stone.
So i dropped down to a 180 grit stone and hit it about 3 times on each side and then i went to a 600 grit stone and hit it about 6 times on each side.
Then i went with the 1000 grit about 25 times on each side and it shaves again.
In the past all i have ever had to do was hit it about 8 times on each side with the 1000 grit stone and it was good to go.
Why did i have to redo the whole thing again?
Also how do i clean the stones?

Probably got dull.0 -
Absent knowing your technique, there really isn't a direct answer.
I use a 3-stone Arkansas stone set currently. Hadn't sharpened a knife for 30+ years, and was a little rusty.
First go round, I was not holding a consistent angle and rounded a number of edges with the coarse stones. Took a bit of time and practice to re-learn the finer points of a fine edge.
Consistent angle through the course of coarses is the key. It will come back with time.0 -
your angle changes with wear.
I just use the lansky diamond stone
I use a little brake kleen and a soft brass brush for cleaning0 -
I use to keep a whet rock on my desk and I'd watch different people come in, while there many would pull out their knives to sharpen.... truthfully very few men used the same methods and it was very entertaining to secretly cut my eye and watch them, most were bad, majority were fair, a few were amazing at what they could do with a blade (I know blade quality has a lot to do with it too). I gave up on knife sharpening....I'm a wheel "grinder", if it'll cut a rope...I'm happy [:D] 0 -
1000 grit is fine for touching up a fairly decent edge. Not so good for sharpening a dull edge. 0 -
i have a cloth wheel on an electric grinder with different grit dressings. when i get a fairly sharp and "consistent" edge with my Lansky i polish it on the wheel. unless i really abuse the edge i can usually just use the cloth wheel for touch up. 0 -

17-1/2 degrees is what my shop teacher told us. I lost my protractor, so I just go by feel.
I can do pretty good on a Buck 110 and most pocket knives. I have a hard Arkansas stone in a cedar case made by Buck. Bought it about 40 years ago. It has served me well.0 -
I've been using a lansky for years. It does a pretty good job when the angles match. I've been wanting to experiment with convex edges using sandpaper, and a mouse pad. 0 -
tried a lot of gadgets over the years but keep going back to my bench stones .Of course it took me the better part of 25 years of trying to get really good at it 0 -
The angle of the edge is everything. You either sharpen the edge that exists or form a new angle. Eventually, you always have to form a new angle, depending on use. 0 -
That angle is what makes buck knives so hard to sharpen. 0 -
I haven't use a 'stone' in years. medium felt polishing wheel with 240 grit 'polish-o-ray' from brownells. 'polish' with the edge down and finish with 400..........takes about 1 min. and done. 0 -
The Great Knife Sharpener is the window of a car. Even better what I have, the window of an 18 wheeler.
Glass. Ceramic, get it?
Roll the window down half way, and run that blade back and forth across the top of the window a dozen times each way.
I have ceramic sticks at home, I have diamond knife sharpeners, I have whet stones that use oil, I have files, I have 'em all and nothing is better than car window glass.

That is what I always use. I have at least a dozen knives spread around in various places.....truck, camper, hunting and EDC/get home bag. Some are more expensive Bark Rivers with a fully convexed blade. Some are Benchmade folders. Some are Moras. Some are inexpensive folders that have been given to me.
They all get the sandpaper/mouse pad treatment. As a final step I use 3000 and 5000 grit Trizact pads from 3M. Use the Trizact once a week for upkeep for my EDC blades.
Very hard to screw it up.
The convex edge it gives is supposed to be stronger...with a bit more 'meat' just behind the cutting edge.0 -

I've seen what you posted done and it works [;)], also have seen knives sharpened with the bottom of coffee cups too...sharp as a Doctors scalpel [:)] Fancy gizmo's apparently aren't needed by those that have the touch, which I don't.0 -
the cons would sharpen their shanks on the wet concrete shower floor,, 0 -
I haven't sharpened anything but a few kitchen knives every now and then. I have some good stones that I have not used in years, but when I do, I finish the blades with a piece of leather, 0 -
I will admit I have lost my touch also I use to be able to shave with a knife was a bragging point of mine .
but over the years got awy from doing a nice job of it last one I tried my pocket knife ( case 3 blade ) I abuse it I use for screwdriver to scraper and pry bar [V] I barley got a edge going
I have to regain my lost art [:D] I am embarrassed to say I even sharpened it [B)]0 -
Work Sharp makes a great knife sharpener. Easy to use and takes about all the guess work out of sharpening. 0 -
I can do pretty well with stones but I now use a Ken Onion Work Sharp with the guides removed. 0 -
A knife seller and sharpener I know uses soap and water to clean the stones. He does not use oil, says it clogs the stones, he actually sharpens with soap and water too.

I can't sharpen a knife worth a damn.
I take my knives to a local guy that does a hell of a job.
My main hunting knife only needs sharpening every few years. I can dress and skin 8-10 deer or more before it's about ready for a trip to my guy! He charges me $2.00 extra because he claims it's the hardest steel he's ever worked with on a knife and it takes him so much longer.
I take my kitchen knives once a year to him.
It's worth it to me.0 -
http://www.grizzly.com/products/Grizzly-8-Razor-Sharp-Edgemaking-System/G5937?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIvsX3jduV3wIVR77ACh3Gcwk3EAQYBSABEgLc5PD_BwE
I have used this system for years and it is the easy and fastest way to put a razor edge on any knife,
This system removes less metal than other methods and will put a razor edge on a blade in less than 5 minutes...hollow ground or other edges.
I have to caution my wife about reaching in the knife drawer...they all are razor sharp.0
