UTI messing with elderly people's minds....WOW
If any of you don't know this......it is AMAZING what a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) can do to an older person's mind. When I think of UTI I think of pain. I don't know what is different about when an older person has this problem??? I've never heard of a young person being mentally affected by a UTI.....but its pretty common for older people.
My mother thinks her roommate at the rehab place is the mother of an old neighbor......and there are dogs in her room.....and the door to her room goes right outside.....and she is in the lobby of the Civic Center in Birmingham. All kinds of fun in Mom's world right now. I told the nurses to make sure to check her because I'm 100% certain it will be a UTI doing this to her.

an assisted living facilty here had a small dog that went around and checked on EVERY person living there...they LOVED IT....then a new administrator run the dog away...botch....the newest administrator got one back ...BRAVO !!!! 0 -
Yep, we see a lot of that. Some family members have a hard time wrapping their mind around that fact Grandma is acting like that because of such a simple thing. Some even argue with us and tell us what idiots we are and swear they are never coming back to our place again. 0 -

I told the nurses to tell my mother's roommate's family that she is not "right" at the moment, but would be better once things are treated. There is no telling what kind of entertainment mother is giving them when they stop by to visit their family member.
The dog is a GREAT idea! The patients probably loved it and it seems like that would be a very quick way to find out something like this is the issue. Waiting on tests to be done and such is nonsense if you have access to a dog that can instantly detect it.0 -
Mom had dementia then developed a UTI while in the nursing home.
It was always an adventure when I would go see her. Her first-grade teacher used to come and see her every day. Her parents would stop by once a week. She had a baby boy at 90 years old, but it didn't come out the usual way, she threw it up, then named it after me. [:0][:D]
She didn't remember anything from the last 20 years or so, but would tell me stories from back in the 30's like they happened yesterday.
You never knew what would come out of her mouth. I would love to tell it here, but it might get me banned.
She lived to the ripe old age of 91, when she passed on Sept 17, 2016.0 -
We learned that uti ?s would cause this with my mom. Whenever she would start to get loopy it was time to hit the doctor office . Sure could get fun talking with her 0 -
My Dad has Dementia and I am convinced it was brought on by UTI's. He has had a catheter since 2005 because of bladder cancer. Starting in 2005 he would get a UTI about every 6 months.
It has just about killed him twice. Now he is crazy with dementia, he still knows who I am but other than he is nuts.
UTIs are no joke in old people +1
My Dad thought there were 2 women living in his house.
He wrecked his car and told me he was in Charleston SC. I go there and he is not where he says he is. I finally find him asleep in his car in Stone Mountain Ga. A cop called me to tell me where he was.
Those are just 2 stories I could go on for hours of all the crazy crap he has done and that was before I got him in a ALF.0
