A relationship tale - read /anime question for you
So as a have said before part of the relationship dynamic I have with the girls is my being older - from a previous generational incarnation I fulfill the role of a cultural educator - responsible with introducing them to things they might have missed in music or film or literature...
And equally I feel that they both play the role of keeping me abreast of current good content that I might miss or lose amidst / amongst the high weeds of much of the garbage that pass for culture today - they keep me young and connected in many ways
If that makes sense - if you hear what I am laying down
And it works - though oddly at times - I and the age gap and generational differences amongst the three of us is part of what sparks the dynamic process as I describe it - since I am 47 (god when did I get so damn old) and makaila is 31 and Mackenzie is 21 years old
I have in the past requested help from you - the membership for bridging those gaps and recommending content that they should own in their hearts and souls
And sometimes it works in tandem - as in the case of japanime / Japanese animation - adult content animated movies and television
One of the few connections I had in common with makaila when we met - when we were awkwardly set up by her friends at a party - when we had that seemingly never ending conversation about everything after we left that party together turned out to be Japanese animation
We had clicked - we had I thought made a connection and despite fact that I had gone to this party as a lark because I had nothing better to do and I knew there would be single women there - I was not looking to start dating again yet having been 12 months out of an apocalypticly bad relationship break up I had been shocked by how much I had enjoyed our super long and diverse talk / intellectual sparing match and could not stop thinking about it / her
And since I had learned that she was a widow having lost her husband and daughter to a drunk driver I was uncertain how to play things out right - how not blow my chance to have another talk like that with her
Later that week I got some texts from and ended up talking to the girl who had invited me to the party - who had previously tried to get me to go to a few events - attend some events (I had thought she was interested in me or had been pursuing me) but it turned out that while she and one of her friends thought I was a nice guy actually was not single or after me except that they thought I would make a nice match with makaila - whom had not dated in several years (since being widowed)
So Taylor had inquired if I had weekend plans - had texted me a few times and than called - was I interested in doing a local film festival classic movie screening and craft beer event with her and some other folks - a group kind of thing that she had passes / tickets for - and mentioned that makaila would be going...
So I said yes - figuring that this would be a good way to get to maybe talk with makaila again but not actually have to at this point ask her on a date yet (yes how stupid of me - I know)
I agreed and plans were made to meet them at the movie house - and that Friday as I was driving to the event Taylor called me and said she was running late from work but to give my name at the admission booth and she would see me soon
Turned out that this group of girls and Taylor had done the same thing to makaila - cause we both showed up for our passes but nobody else was there yet - they were running late and finally when it was getting close to time for the movie to start makaila and I went into the theater and sat in our assigned seating (as indicated on the passes - tickets) which happened to be side by side
The movie turned out to be Akira - one we had both seen before - a much talked about Japanese animation science fiction horror flick (and as I am certain you have figured out or guessed nobody else ever showed up - just us)
So that tale while I thought you might find interesting was a bit on a who shot john long way round to get to the question part of the thread...
We have been working on introducing Mackenzie to the Japanese animation / anime / adult animation genre and while makaila has been focusing on Akira time period (remember she named the dog Akira) forward I have been trying to start earlier and perhaps some content more along the lines of what I saw when I was young that made an impact
So we have on our list:
Akira
Gall Force (the original full length film)
Heavy Metal
Star Rangers the original cartoon episodic serial (with the space battleship yamato and her super bow adjacent wave motion gun) (and the endless reboot and continuation content that is out there)
Starship Troopers (the animated episodic cartoon serialized version)
And we have also thrown in Speed Racer
What would you add to the list - does anybody other that me care to admit appreciating the genre???
What would you add to the must watch desert island disc edition or bucket list of japanime - adult animated content
And yes feel free to mock my relationship tale...

Mike, I remember being exposed to Japanese animation back in the early to mid 1960's.
An early (cable) down state big city TV channel that showed the series; "Kimba" the white lion. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058817/?ref_=nv_sr_2
The other show which seemed to be almost (but not quite) just a series of still pictures dubbed in English, "Astro Boy". https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056739/?ref_=tt_rec_tt There were some later episodes of Astro Boy that you could tell by slightly more advanced animation techniques, that they were newer made.
All of these "cartoons" shared several common features in artistry which to me, indicates the same artists were involved in multiple projects (different shows).
Another thing I have found quite interesting is the exchanges that were taking place in the late 50's and early 60's between the Japanese and American animators.
Remembering such shows as Rankin\Bass productions of "King Kong" https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0293728/?ref_=nm_flmg_prd_52 and even the classic "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" come to mind where you can see the obvious similarities to earlier Japanese animation and art.0 -
Yes - I don't mean weird Japanese tentacle fetish porn or sailor moon in the shower- I just mean to differentiate between cartoons for children and animation for an older audience
I also am tangentially aware that much similar content has come out of India but it's been considered of lesser quality and less developed content story wise
And my experience has been somewhat science fiction - space battle based as I have always been a heavy reader of military sci fi
A series referred to as "vampire hunter" has also been recommended
I did recently watch "they were 11" with makaila but we both found it a bit boring and flat despite its science fiction / space exploration plot lines
And perhaps I should also add that I prefer full English dubbed versions as I do not speak Japanese
