Sam06/Ebola

Sam, you've spent about forever in the Congo and related areas. Was Ebola ever really contained at all? It seems after every reported outbreak/epidemic the powers that be make a big deal, declare it eliminated only to have more pop up within a short period of time. I'm reading it's rearing it's ugly face again though I have my doubts, given the environment and the little reading I've done on the region/politics/population/living conditions, etc, that it's ever gonna be done away with.

    I spent about 2 years in the DR Congo but I was never near any of the Ebola areas and they did not have any large break outs of it when I was there.

    From what I know they get from eating meat that is infected with it. The people who live in the country will eat just about anything and eat a lot of monkey meat.

    I had 2 guys die from eating some kind of meat that was poisoned. Poisoning is big over there.

    This recent out break of Ebola is in an area I have been too.

    It often seems disease outbreaks such as Ebola are like crime...it's been being "reduced/eliminated/contained" as long as anyone can remember but it's never gone away.

    My limited reading on Ebola and related hemorrhagic diseases is enough to make your blood run cold. If that stuff ever took hold in our population, containing it would be damn near impossible. I taught classes to initial responders regarding NBC events. When the discussion turned to actual 'drastic' containment measures that may be necessary, especially with the biologicals, for contaminated/potentially contaminated individuals/populated areas, the room would get very, very quiet.

    Yes Ebola is serious.


    There was a book by I think Tom Clancy where the bad guys/country get a bunch of Monkeys and a few people with ebola get all their blood and put it in a spray can. The cans of ebola are sen to the US and sprayed in public places.

    I think it was called Executive Orders

    Yep. A damn good read and it will scare the pants off of you if you think about it.

    Yes Sir. One of my MOS's was 54Echo. (Nuclear, Biological , Chemical Warfare.) They talked at length about weaponized Ebola. (Sending infected individuals [think Suicide Bombers,] on airplanes around the World.)

    Very scary stuff.

    Ebola does indeed lie low for periods of time. The reservoir species is/are unknown, but bats might be a good guess. It lives happily in some species or other until for some reason it gets transferred to an animal in which it causes disease. Eating bush meat certainly exacerbates the problem.

    Barz, how soon we forget the scourge of Polio and the devastation it wrought on the populations of the world. Apparently this disease, which as many others before and since, was declared have been eliminated, wasn?t.

    I think the Earth is long over due for a pandemic.

    I am not sure if its going to be a hemorrhagic fever or a Flu but its coming.


    The best defense is to stay away from people if you can. No shots will prevent it.

    Long over due somehow suggests we deserve it, but I think it is somewhat like the next big quake on the West Coast, we know one is coming, the question is when. Ebola never seems to spread far before it is contained. My bet would be a Flu virus.
