I have mixed feelings about this

My understanding is the giraffe hunts are cull hunts. Giraffes can do quite a bit of damage to agriculture.

Like lions, giraffes have no value to the locals unless someone is paying to hunt them. Stock ranchers will tolerate lions if there is value in the lion. Same for giraffes, farmers will tolerate them if there is an off setting value to make up for crop damage. No off setting value and the farmers/ranchers will kill of these animals themselves, often more than the hunters are taking.

Most of the "save the lions" found this out after getting lion hunting banned. Turned out with no hunting value the locals decreased the lion population below the level sustained when hunting was allowed.

I have been on 3 hunts in Africa all were cull hunts and were hosted by my employers. Hippos, Crocs, Cape Buffs and various crappy antelope like water bucks. I have shot a bunch of smaller stuff too like Dik Dik, Wart Hogs, baboons and other "varmints". I did get to shoot a Leopard but it was not very sporting, shot over bait in a tree from a blind.

In Africa the Bird hunting is awesome and I really enjoyed it.

    I used a 338WM for most everything.

I have done a lot of hunting. I have killed over 90 whitetail, lost track in fact, and have killed 15 wild hogs. I ate every one of them and it is the best meat available, organic, and the venison very low in fat.

I don't like trophy hunting I don't understand why a person would kill one of these beautiful animals for "sport."

    Amen, brother!

From the article, "Now let?s address the Hunters who ridiculously attack other hunters. First of all, you must enjoy being looked at as ignorant. Because hunters who read your posts and have ACTUALLY been there and know better think, ?what an idiot?. And the Anti Hunters laugh hysterically at you because they actually got you to join them and help attack another hunter. They really think you are a winner! "

It is simple economics. Make a few hunts so profitable tribes will actively help stopping poachers.

Don't have expensive hunts for say Leopards then there is no reason for tribes to risk themselves against armed poachers. This leads to far more leopards (insert name of any other animal here) being killed and eventually extinction.

That said I would never hunt most African animals but there is a real logic to the hunts for the animal's benefit

"Talley, who has been receiving death threats since the photos emerged, defended her kill, telling Fox News that the giraffe was 18 and too old to breed.

She added that the giraffe had killed three younger bulls in the herd who were able to breed.

The breed is not rare in any way other than it was very old. Giraffes get darker with age."

Her life, her hunt. She did it legally so I have no problem with it. 2,000lbs of meat was donated.

What I do have a problem with is an article I read on the same hunt where the anti hunter commenters were posting her personal info and address.[:(!]

I don?t think I?d shoot a giraffe unless it was doing unacceptable damage to my property, but that?s not to say anybody else shouldn?t do what they think is right as long as it?s legal.

The author of the article left his prejudice hanging out when he called the carcass of the animal a corpse.

My friend who also killed a giraffe about 5 years ago said his was the same- it was too old to breed but wouldn't let the younger ones breed, either. After a couple of years of no babies, there goes the herd. It's a management tool, no different than shooting does to reduce numbers is a management tool.

Hunters who attack other hunters who are following the rules and hunting legally need to cut it out.

im curios on why its ok to hunt other species, but this one is not ?

    sorry but it reminds me of the same mindset of those against one constitutional amendment{the 2nd} but all in an uproar when you say something against another {the 1st}

Anything "black" getting hunted by a Buwana is racist [:D].

As for the giraffe carcass them bones will make some nice grips. I kind a want a long bone of a giraffe to use as a cane or a walking stick. Use it as a whack a whacka stick on some fools.

It's kind a funny folks sending shooters death treats [:D].

The way I interpreted what I read... "Black Giraffes" are rare ONLY because they don't live too long. The text explained that Giraffe's orange patches turn black after they've gotten old. Much as human hair turns white/grey with old age.

If they lived longer or survived natural predation, there would be more 'Black Giraffe' to see and therefor not be so rare.

Yes, a beautiful animal... But, still an animal.

You are correct. What makes them rare is most don't live that long.

On the flip side I hate to see people bullied on the internet.

All these snowflake libtards are such hypocrites they decry internet bully's but when stuff like this comes up they pile on. Typical.[V]

Looks like little Tessie Talley should have posted the picture on GunBroker instead of Facebook. I?d bet she would have gotten fewer death threats.

Her hunt, but imo, I wouldn't post on Spacebook just for the reason of idiots who are threatening her and family.
People posting are commenting from Wendy's eating their cheeseburgers, like that isn't an animal.

I was not going to reply until I researched the facts,, I am not a fan of straight Trophy hunts even here.. This hunt I have no problem with,, in fact I think the conservation office has gotten smart. In the past,, they would send out an officer and just cull a problem animal and let it lay. Now they charge for it and it help the Conservation,, This Animal was 18years old and was well past breeding age, He was killing younger Giraffes that were coming of breeding age to keep them from females,,3 they know of recently. They cleaned it and donated all 2000lbs of meat.. We do the same thing here,, many deer hunters will not kill a buck under 3 years old,, they cull the older ones,, almost all game ranches here have cull hunts of older animals, I watched PIGMAN doing it this morning on the outdoor channel.. As long as they are true cull hunts that will HELP the herd I am all for it

I used to just live till the opening day of deer season and I can't rightly remember how many I have harvested...only had one shovel case, gave the meat to a farmer's family....

Never was into trophy hunting, my Dad was very adamant about "Don't shoot it unless you intend to eat it."...it stuck with me. Stopped deer hunting about 40 years ago , just couldn't justify it since I was the only one in the immediate family that liked venison.

Continued to hunt feral hogs up until a few years ago...but my bad knees just couldn't take the stress...bummer. I make my own sausage so the hogs were really a money saver for me.

All this said, I have no problem with folks hunting whatever as long as it is legal and not wasteful...shooting an animal just to watch it fall is criminal in my opinion.

    I'll second this.

There's noting wrong with celebrating your hunt, including the trophy.
But, hunting should result in benefit to both herd and family. Not just dressing the wall.

A trophy hunter will have a different perspective I'm sure. But that's my opinion.

There is something about a giraffe.

It?s no big deal to hunt a black water buffalo but the antis see a giraffe as something they just stopped playing with in their crib and pile on.

They true hunter understands hers managment but not the stuffed animal loving anti
