WW2 bring back item for ID

I have a 30-06 Schell casing that came to me along with other items from a WW2 vet. It has a wooden stopper on the top and inside are what looks like short porcupine quills. The vet served in the Pacific theater . I put a skull and cross bones on the side and put it away.


Any comments from you WW2 collector guys on what they might be for ? My guess was possible poison and that's why I put the skull and bones on it. What other purpose might they be for ?

    A blank cartridge for firing the Vivek-Bessieres grenade. The bullet went through the center of the grenade and a metal bullet had too much range.

    Cartridge has been fired - Approximately 2 inch long quills sharp on both ends. The empty case is simply a holder for the quills - a fired case. The stopper is hand carved with a crude ball type head.
