garage Fire
not a good day . for me
I was outside smelled smoke started checking
one of my out buildings I relented to my oldest son to store books in was smoking I opened the door then closed it back to keep air from feeding the fire
called the fire dept its all volunteer , what seemed like fore ever I had already dumped the 4 water extinguisher I have ( keep in the garage ) thru the window ( the fire had took it out ) and was spraying thru it with the garden hose when the first truck showed up
they were a bit unorganized but I was helping the fellow with me was in his 70's its a mix of older and some young men and women then several more trucks and groups showed up
then the butterfly valve hooked to the pumper truck let go ( I think they had the pressure way to high ) blew it apart and off the truck ( OH boy )
more time to reroute the hoses and start putting water on the fire again
they did get it out I knew it would be a bear to put out my son must have a 1000 books in plastic totes stacked 5 feet tall and no room to move packed full ( well he had ) I had two table saws a miter saw several batter powered kits saws drills and so on _+ more tools and items
all gone now .. hope the insurance company is generous and understanding
from what we could tell from the burn pattern and most heat / damage
the dehumidifier caused it . the fire crew told me they knew of at least 5 this year caused by one
no one injured the building is away from the house and pole barn so lucky (?) it could have got ugly fast
most of the crews know us from the area . so we talked a bit
had one do a follow up just before dark we were talking guns and never knowing any more . invited him out to shoot with us
my oldest son was away at a book show had a bunch of book with him so at least he saved them .
not looking forward to the mess and insurance company not to mention building another garage may have to wait until next year

Very sorry to hear.
Praying insurance works out for you.0 -
Dammit. Sorry for your loss. Thankful no one was hurt. Hoping the insurance company takes care of you as you have them through the years of paying premiums. 0 -
Sorry to hear this?.I am thankful no one was injured. 0 -
Sorry to hear, ditchrunner. Small town fire departments are great to have, but few of the folks understand how to pump water. You have to understand pumps and pressures and water flow. In rural areas where there are few hydrants, a pumper with a 1000 gallon tank can run out of water quickly.
Most depts have engineers in title only.
The crew I was in had a factory guy come and show us what all the dials and knobs on the pumper were for.0 -
Sorry you had a fire.
Yeah volunteers usually have to go get the truck FIRST
Takes time.
BUT they do save ya a bunch in taxes.
Use the savings for extra coverage.0 -
Sorry to hear. At least you were home, and on it before it got out of hand. 0 -
Sorry to hear about the damages, I'm glad at least the house is ok and that nobody got hurt. 0 -
I will reiterrare what everyone else has said, glad everyone is okay.
The garage, books, and tools can easily be replaced. I'm sure your son will be a bit bummed out, but he can always rebuild his inventory.

my oldest son due in tonight my wife send a few photos to him ( he was a show selling books ) I think when he see's it it will be a hard pill t swallow .
I will call the insurance company tomorrow see if and what they will cover
I think my son has a business set up in his name selling books I hope so maybe he can write off a loss ? to help out .. not sure how that works ether0 -
Generally, your home owners insurance will cover the personal property of you & your spouse; personal property belonging to anyone else is covered only if their name is on your policy.

I've saw several recalls on dehumidifiers, if it was one that was on the recall list it might help the insurance company. They should send the fire marshal out to investigate. 0 -
