Theodore " Dutch " J. Van Kirk was the navigator on the "Enola happy" when it dropped the bomb at Hiroshima, Japan, and is the last surviving member of the crew.
This really happened!
Dutch was asked to speak at a grammar school recently. The young teacher introduced him by saying the speaker was a veteran of World War Eleven (as in WWII).
Dutch stood up and walked out of the school without saying a word. End of story.

Dutch was a good guy. I have book about the history of the 393d Bombardment Squadron of which Dutch was a member that I purchased at a local gun show many years ago.
Spoke to him for a few minutes and then he signed my book.0 -
Bartz, this morning I went online to check when our local muzzle loading deer season would begin.
I was all about getting things set up for the 3rd when my wife mentioned that she had heard from one of her friends that the season didn't start until the 7th.
I went back online, only to find that the site I checked was dated 4 years ago.[:(] Only writing this to say that old eyes do not often see the fine print when reading a story.0 -

Van Kirk died in a rest home nearly five years ago.
