3:30 am..........

heard a strange thud/thunk that woke me and the wife up. almost like someone had droped a cinder block at the end of the bed, felt it almost as much as heard it. got up to see what had fell over. we searched the house, looked out on front porch and back, even downstairs, nothing. we looked for good 10-15 minutes. so went back to bed

was laying there trying to think what it could have been, we have a raised ranch/split level with garage under the house, then I thought I wonder if it was the spring on the garage door, as our bedroom is right over the garage. got back up went down and turned lights on, no spring is still wrapped on bar. then just happened to look between car and truck and saw a big pile of dirt by the post, a jack post. looked up and the post was loose and the "dirt" was a pile of rust. the bottom 4 inches of post had almost exploded.

we now have a small crack in the doorway of two room that was about fingernail thick, just got back from lowes with new post, tightened it up with couple small sections of iron pipe on the monkey wrench, came back up and the cracks have closed, now that is the weirdest thing I have ever seen and if not for the small rust pile would never have figured it out, guess the house must have settled 1/4 to half inch when post gave out, hope to get 40 years out of the new post, if so it won't be my worry next time....[;)]
