Just lost the "whats that smell" game.

All day long I've been searching for a slight nasty smell. I thought it might be something in the fridge, but it never was strong. I pulled everything out and checked the dates. A huge full Salmon, didn't expire until tomorrow. A BIG pack of chicken breasts, expiration date was three days from now. It wasn't the cheese....nothing else was hidden in there. My husband tossed an employees lunch thinking that MIGHT have been the smell (apologies followed once he realized what he had done.)

I checked the potatoes.....onions.....and even took the garbage can outside in case something was tossed that might be causing it.

I pulled the chicken out and repacked it in freezer bags. The salmon was going to me tonight's dinner.....going to be.....yeah.....that was it.

It didn't smell when you took a whiff of the sealed package....but once you cut into the plastic.....O.......M......G....that was nasty.

So, whatever critter is living in the woods behind my house is having a feast and I'm one unhappy camper!!!

$35.....just great. I just bought it two days ago. I wasn't expecting it to go bad a day before the expiration date!!!

    a little Grease had run down the side of the stove, out of site.

    10 pounds of Keta Salmon? Now if it was that Costco farmed stuff it's better off in the bellies of critters [xx(].

    Kind a shocked all the antibiotics didn't keep it fresh longer. Maybe it was bad when you bought it?

    This is the first time I can remember having something go bad BEFORE the expiration date. Its uncanny to think of how they can predict the exact date hamburger will turn grey. I'm not one to push my luck with these things. I'll freeze something before I'll risk letting it sit in the fridge past it's date.


    Whats silly about this is that I usually end up tossing things out after they've been in the freezer for a year or so. I am HORRIBLE when it comes to dealing with managing the kitchen.

    L\F, I had a similar experience with a slab of bacon I bought several months ago. The package date on the bacon was over a month down the road and it was definitely as rotten as a 4 day road kill in 90 degree weather![xx(]

    It was so bad, that I have not had any bacon cravings since I tossed the putrid pork. It had been in one of those very tight vacuum sealed thick plastic packages and my new refrigerator keeps everything super cold. I had paid the high dollar for a premium American brand (Hormel) and could have, would have, should have, taken it back to the store but the smell in my car was not going to happen![:(!]

    I almost called the store over this fish thing.....but I cannot imagine going through whatever they were going to tell me to do. I wouldn't have even saved the label off the package in fear that I would continue to smell that mess.

    Bacon....that is a strange one. It lasts forever!!!

    I would check on the advisability of leaving rotten salmon where a domestic animal could consume it. Around here, rotten salmon is generally considered poisonous to dogs. Not store -bought, but the kind that die in the creeks and rivers after spawning. Dogs just love to roll in that stuff and get it embedded in their fur.

    Between the GIANT raccoons and the pack of foxes I'm sure nothing domestic has any chance of getting to anything in the woods behind my house before the wild critters take care of things. I don't know if a rabbit would eat this sort of thing, but I must have 100's of them out there too. We go from having lots of rabbits and a few foxes.....or....more foxes and fewer rabbits. Right now the rabbits are in full force, so I don't see the foxes much. I bet next year will be different.

    Kasey can't swear to it, but I allways heard rabbitts ran in 7 year cycles like locust, you may be on the high year
