Tagged out. Weird After Shot Reaction

I had 4 does come in at 730 this am for the second weekend of the ILL gun season.
I had one tag left and took aim at the biggest of the bunch.
60 yards with a Savage Bolt 12 gauge and Hornady SST.
Shot was a little high but a double lung.
At the shot, all four deer ran about ten yards and stopped and looked around.
I knew my shot was good but, she showed no sign of a hit.
I was afraid to shoot her again for the fact that I wasn?t positive that the one I was looking at was the one I?d shot.
She stood for about 30 seconds an fell over dead.
I?ve never in my 37 years of deer hunting seen one shot with a gun do that.
Seen plenty with a arrow not react much, not knowing they?d been shot but with the sound of the shot and impact of the bullet, it was just weird.

    I have never seen a Deer do that but I have watched an Elk take a 7mm Rem Mag in the lungs and pump and just stand there.

    have seen them do that many times with muzzleloader. don't use shotgun but would guess it about the same, doesn't have the initial " shock " of a high powered rifle, more to the order of bow hunting, poke big hole in her, she is dead just doesn't know it. and the sound isn't the same as a rifle, have had deer stand and look at me after shooting while I reload. then there are the times you just get stupid deer...

    Had two does walk out at 65 yards last Tuesday. I had tags for three more does and 1 buck left. Popped the biggest one in the head, DRT. The other one ran off, but almost immediately walked back out at 50 yards. Neck shot took care of the stupid one. The game biologist told us we need to kill 70 does off our 7000 acre lease this year, and 50 next year to keep the buck/doe ratio more in line, and lessen the food competition for the bucks.

    I have always thought and wondered about a deer being shot just after taking in a full lungs full of air vs one that was shot on the exhale.

    On the exhale, I hypothesize that the deer would drop sooner than the one that just filled its lungs. Of coarse all shots being made in the kill zones. ?????

    I shot a deer last season from about 35 yards with my 45 caliber flintlock muzzle loader. 80 grains 3F B\P, tightly patched .44 round lead ball. Shot in the neck. That deer did a complete back flip, landing on it's feet and traveled about 25 yards before dropping dead.

    I was amazed by that back flip!

    We've taken 40 of them, turned the kids loose on them! [:)] We haven't let all the bucks walk either. A couple of nice 10 pointers, several 8's (including one for me). The biologist was very informative, and the G And F dept. pays him. He has a Master's in game biology, really a nice guy, down to earth, and born and raised within 30 miles of our lease.

    Shot a 8 point buck two years ago about 150 yd with the Valmet 308. Clear shot in a lane and done a perfect heart shot. It ran across the lane right into a pine tree and took its front hoofs like it was trying to climb the tree. Fell over dead. Must have lost about a gallon of blood in the process.

    I have shot around a hundred whitetail, lost count at 85-something, and never seen one react like that. With no reaction.

    I have killed over a dozen with the muzzleloaders, and used 30-30, bolt 30-06 and other guns. In fact I have made about 75 lung shots and every one hauled ass.

    It was weird as hell Allen.
    Noticed I broke one rib with the shot.
    You?d think that?d be enough to make it run.
    But I have meat hanging and that?s all that matters.

    Shot a nice standing doe at about 100 yards with my 20 gauge. (smooth bore -std slugs) She didn't show a sign of a hit but took off running at full speed toward my direction but about 20 yards to my right. I took a second shot which went high at about 50 yards.

    She kept coming at a dead run and I shot again at 30 yards. She disappeared . My first shot had been within a couple inches of my aim. I hit slightly above the heart taking out both lungs. My third shot hit her just behind the ear when she came down like a rock. It's amazing how far they can go when hit. When I opened her up the lungs were just shattered and full of blood in the chest cavity.

    You guys are killing me. In New Mexico you are damn lucky to get drawn for a single buck which must have at least a fork on one side. Forget does, a few in special youth hunts only. To eat, I have to go out of state most of the time.

    Yes minrvrat48 that is what is usually astonishing about deer hunting, is how far they WILL run when fatally hit.

    I have made 6 or 8 heart shots, most with the 30-06, just low lung shots really but a heart shot will do in a pinch.

    EVERY ONE of the heart shot ran like a, well, a deer. Minimum 80 yards.
    This is with a heart blown into hamburger. And both lungs blown out too. Incredible.

    I will promise you if someone shoots me in the heart with 2,800 foot pounds, I will just lay down and die. Promise.
